Aamir Jangu, Roston Chase set test record with 401-run partnership

West Indies batsmen Aamir Jangu and Roston Chase created history by making the record of the highest partnership for the sixth wicket in Test cricket. Jangu and Chase added a record 401 runs against Sri Lanka in the first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, giving the hosts complete control of the match.

The Sri Lankan team, which came to bat first, was out for 308 runs in the first innings. West Indies declared the innings with a mammoth score of 626/9 and took a lead of 318 runs after a record-breaking partnership between Jangu and Chase. Sri Lanka reached stumps on the third day at 15/1, still trailing by 303 runs in Antigua.

Aamir Jangu and Roston Chase joined him at the crease when West Indies were struggling at 168/5 and still behind Sri Lanka’s first innings score. The pair batted for almost five sessions and added a record 401 runs in 602 balls for the sixth wicket.

Their partnership broke the previous sixth-wicket Test record of 399 runs, set by England’s Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow against South Africa in Cape Town in 2016. Jangu and Chase became the first pair in 149 years of Test cricket to add 400 runs for the sixth wicket or less.

This stand is now the second highest partnership for any wicket in West Indies Test history. The reason behind this is the 446-run partnership between Garfield Sobers and Conrad Hunt against Pakistan in Kingston in 1958.

Aamir Jangu breaks record by scoring double century

Aamir Jangu performed brilliantly for West Indies in his second Test match. Playing as a replacement for Shai Hope following an injury, the left-handed batsman scored an impressive 233 runs off 373 balls with the help of 19 fours and three sixes.

He recorded the highest individual score by a West Indies batsman in the World Test Championship. Captain Roston Chase provided excellent support by scoring 194 runs in 324 balls with 13 fours and two sixes as the pair completed their record-breaking partnership.

After the day’s play, Jangu said he was happy with his innings but was focused on helping West Indies win the Test. The batsman also said that he is ready to contribute in fielding on the fourth day.

“Couldn’t have been a better day than this. Grateful but we have a Test match to win. Nice wicket of Nissanka. Unfortunately, we could have taken another wicket but I gave away half the chances. He is a player we know. I will spend most of the time on the field tomorrow and hopefully take a few catches,” Jangu said.
