Former Indian cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra has launched a scathing attack on England head coach Brendon McCullum after facing another crushing defeat in the ongoing Ashes 2025-26 series in Australia.
The Ben Stokes-led England cricket team suffered an eight-wicket defeat in the day-night Test at the Gabba on December 7 and lost the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia 0-2. The embarrassing defeat put the tourists’ Ashes 2025-26 campaign in serious jeopardy.
Aakash Chopra criticizes Brendon McCullum’s ‘over-preparation’ claim after England’s Gabba defeat
Chopra was stunned by Brendon McCullum’s explanation after the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, where the England coach suggested his team may have trained too much ahead of the day-night Test against Australia. McCullum defended his side, saying players needed to feel physically and mentally prepared, stressing that training load and freshness must be balanced.

The comment came as a surprise as England had played only one warm-up match before the high-octane five-match Test series, and they had also avoided fielding their main players in the pink-ball tour games after losing the first Test within two days.
Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel, “Brendon McCullum was asked about his preparation after losing the Test match. He said that he was overprepared and the whole world lost. There was a match going on and you were not letting your people play. There was just one match in the gap, but you did not play.”
Aakash Chopra criticizes Brendon McCullum for ‘casual’ attitude after consecutive England defeats
Chopra noted that McCullum’s words showed a casual approach towards Test cricket at a time when England desperately needed clarity and accountability.
The former Indian batsman felt that the England head coach’s comments seemed like a mockery of Test cricket, especially when they looked under-prepared from the start of the tour.
He further said in his video, “You come and swing the bat, try to hit sixes, lose one match in two days and another match in four days, and then say you were overprepared. How does this really work? Isn’t it becoming a bit ridiculous? What are you saying? You have made a bit of a mockery of Test cricket.”

Aakash Chopra questions England’s claim of being ‘custodians of Test cricket’ after WTC failures
Aakash Chopra has raised serious questions on England’s attitude towards Test cricket. He pointed out that England often behave as if they are the “self-proclaimed custodians” of the Test format and they are the only ones keeping the format alive, but their results tell a very different story. Even after four ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycles, they have never come close to reaching the final.
The cricket pundit pointed out that England like to show that they make Test cricket entertaining with aggressive play, but this style has not helped them win important matches or series. He also wondered whether England fans really enjoy this entertaining cricket when the team keeps losing.
Chopra said, “You are the only one who is making it entertaining and thinking about the audience and the game. Other people are winning series and lifting trophies; you are not getting anywhere, but you are the one who is caring. What kind of love is this? Do England supporters like it when a guy hits fours and sixes, but the team loses every day?”
