Why did ACB appoint a new captain before the Ireland tour?
The ACB was forced to appoint a new captain for the ODI and Test formats after Hashmatullah Shahidi resigned from the post a few days ago. Through an official release, the cricket board informed about the change in leadership roles. The Afghanistan cricket team’s tour of Ireland will be Rahmat Shah’s first assignment as the full-time captain of the national cricket team.
Under the leadership of Hashmatullah Shahidi, the Afghan national cricket team recorded 27 wins in 55 ODI matches. During his captaincy, the team achieved its highest position of seventh in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, a significant achievement for Afghanistan cricket since their emergence in international cricket.
Shahidi’s resignation comes after a disappointing performance against India. With Shahidi as captain, the team suffered a Test defeat against India and a 3β0 clean sweep in an ODI series.
Just a few weeks ago, Ireland had defeated India 2-0.
Needless to say, the series against Ireland will not be easy for the Rahmat Shah-led team. A few weeks ago, the Ireland national cricket team shocked the cricket world by defeating 2026 T20 World Cup winners India 2-0 in a two-match T20 series.
This was the first time that Ireland defeated India in an international series. Both the matches against India were in Belfast. In Belfast, Afghanistan are scheduled to face the home team for three matches in the upcoming five-match series.
While Ireland will try to maintain their momentum, Afghanistan will aim to make a comeback in ODIs.
