There has been an interesting twist in the ICC men’s batting rankings, with Shubman Gill moving closer on points to current No. 1 ODI batsman Daryl Mitchell. Along with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, all of them have played great series in the last few weeks.
Shubman Gill is still at the second position in the list, the New Zealand batsman is currently on top of the chart but the difference in points is not much. A poor performance by either of them can have a serious impact on their ranking as they will go up or down as per their performance in the upcoming series.
Shubman Gill narrows the gap with Daryl Mitchell
With two half-centuries in three matches in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against the England national cricket team, Shubman Gill is second in the list with 801 points. He scored 80* in the first game and looked all set for a century, but he had to retire hurt due to cramps.
In the second ODI, Shubman Gill was looking in great form but could not convert his start into a half-century and was out on 31 runs. He scored 77 runs at Lord’s and played a beautiful innings. Shubman Gill will look to get more points from the upcoming series against West Indies in September.
Daryl Mitchell’s recent form
Daryl Mitchell has 802 points, his only point as he struggled to score runs in the recently concluded series against the West Indies, scoring 28 runs in the last two ODIs and 65 in the first ODI.
Mitchell will be looking to play some good innings in the next ODI series which will be held at home against his favorite rivals India in November. He was the leading run-scorer in the series earlier this year when these two teams met in India and the Kiwis won it 2-1.
Joe Root has moved up four places in the ODI rankings
Virat Kohli is at third place with 767 points and he is followed by former India captain Rohit Sharma with 758 points. Following his impressive series against India, Joe Root has moved up four places to eighth in the same rankings list for ODI batsmen.
Root was the difference maker in all three ODIs against India. He scored 76* in the first game and scored a brilliant unbeaten 99* just missing out on a good century and in the final match he scored 74* as England won the series 2–1.
Apart from him, his England colleagues Ben Duckett has moved up 11 places to 19th and Jacob Bethell has moved up five places to 64th.
Joffra Archer has reached top 3
As for the bowlers, Rashid Khan still tops the rankings for ODI bowlers, with England fast bowler Jofra Archer, who again had an amazing series against the Men in Blue, taking a big step forward as he gained one place to third with 649 points.
Abrar Ahmed is in second place with 675 marks. Mitchell Santner also moved up three places to number four. West Indies spinner Gudakesh Moti climbed seven places to ninth, another big step up in the top 10 rankings, while teammate Alzarri Joseph climbed 10 places to 26th.
