Rohit Sharma broke 21 records during his historic Lord’s ODI century against England

Rohit Sharma’s century at Lord’s was not just another ODI century. It became one of the most statistically significant innings of his career as the Indian opener recreated several records held by Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Don Bradman, Joe Root and many other great players during India’s third ODI against England.

Although India fell 27 runs short while chasing 388 and lost the three-match series 2-1, Rohit Sharma’s brilliant innings of 138 off 110 balls remained one of the finest overseas ODI innings by an Indian batsman. During the innings, he climbed several all-time lists and made several historical milestones.

Rohit Sharma made the biggest record with Lord’s ODI century

Rohit Sharma created history by becoming the first Indian batsman to score an ODI century at Lord’s, ending India’s long wait at one of the most prestigious venues in cricket. Earlier in the Home of Cricket, no Indian had been able to reach three figures in a One Day International match.

At the age of 39 years and 80 days, Rohit also became the oldest Indian to score an ODI century, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record of 38 years and 327 days. He also became the oldest Indian to register an ODI score of over 50 in England.

His innings of 138 is now the highest ODI score by an Indian batsman in England, surpassing the previous Indian best in the country.

With this inning, Rohit Sharma completed 1,603 runs in ODI history in England, making him the highest run scorer in ODI history among the visiting batsmen in England. He went ahead of Virat Kohli (1,419+), Kane Williamson (1,393), Ricky Ponting (1,387) and Viv Richards (1,345).

Rohit Sharma also registered his eighth ODI century in England, the most by any visiting batsman in the country’s ODI history. Remarkably, he reached the milestone in just 30 innings and equaled England’s Marcus Trescothick’s tally of eight centuries, but in exactly half the innings.

Another milestone saw Rohit become the second visiting batsman after Don Bradman to score 10 international centuries in England. Bradman finished 11th, while Rohit finished 10th, ahead of greats like Viv Richards, Rahul Dravid, Steve Smith, Steve Waugh and Gordon Greenidge.

With the help of Lord’s century, Rohit became the Indian opener to score the most international centuries. His score of 46 put him ahead of Sachin Tendulkar (45), while Virender Sehwag (36) and Sunil Gavaskar (34) remained behind him.

This was also Rohit’s ninth ODI century against England, tying him for the most ODI centuries by an Indian batsman against the English team.

The century was his 17th while chasing as an opening batsman in ODIs, equaling the all-time record in that category.

With five sixes during the innings, Rohit Sharma extended his record for most international sixes by an Indian against England, taking his tally to 61.

He also became the first Asian opening batsman to score 9,000 international runs against SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia), underscoring his remarkable success in the toughest overseas conditions.

This innings made him the first batsman in ODI history to score 15 centuries in SENA countries, easily surpassing every other Asian batsman.

Rohit also extended his world record for most international sixes against SENA teams, reaching 346 and surpassing Chris Gayle (342) by a wide margin.

This was Rohit’s 34th century in ODI cricket, which he achieved in 280 innings, making him the second fastest batsman in history to reach this milestone, behind only Virat Kohli (197 innings) and ahead of Sachin Tendulkar (298).

Why is Rohit Sharma’s Lord’s century ranked as the biggest ODI innings by an Indian abroad?

Rohit Sharma’s Lord’s heroics stand out because it took him to multiple overseas records simultaneously rather than just one.

This century made him the first visiting batsman in history to score an ODI century at eight different venues in England. His centuries have now come at Edgbaston, Bristol, Leeds, The Oval, Old Trafford, Southampton, Trent Bridge and Lord’s.

The knock also gave Rohit Sharma his 10th international century in England, making it the second-most by a visiting batsman in the country, behind only Don Bradman’s 11 centuries. This took him to 10 international centuries in a single tour country, equal to Sachin Tendulkar’s century tally in Sri Lanka, surpassed only by Virat Kohli’s 12 centuries in Australia.

Among Asian batsmen, Rohit further strengthened his record for most ODI centuries in SENA countries, taking his tally to 15, also equaling Virat Kohli’s record of most 50-plus ODI scores by a visiting batsman in England, both now at 15.

His aggressive innings also marked the 37th occasion when he hit five or more sixes in an international innings for India, surpassing his own national record by a wide margin.

What makes Rohit’s 138 at Lord’s really special is not any one statistic but the number of milestones he achieved. In a single innings, he climbed into the all-time Indian, overseas and world cricket record books, making this innings one of the most historic ODI centuries of his illustrious career.
