India national cricket team captain Shubman Gill started his team’s performance in the final ODI of the three-match series against the England national cricket team on Sunday, July 19. England defeated India by 27 runs to win the series 1–2. England made a comeback after losing the first match.
Speaking after the defeat, Shubman Gill was disappointed and said that the team failed to execute its plans in this final ODI at Lord’s, London. He praised the collective efforts of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. This is another series defeat for Shubman Gill away from home.
Ben Duckett goes aggressive against Shubman Gill’s team
England won the toss and elected to bat first, as the home side made just one change in the series decider, bringing in Josh Tong in place of Saqib Mahmood. While the Men in Blue made three changes, Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar were ruled out of the final match; They brought in Prince Yadav and Arshdeep Singh and KL Rahul replaced Shivam Dubey.
Openers Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethel got off to a bright start as they both were in touch from the first over of the game and had a partnership of 192 runs between them, with both batsmen scoring half centuries, with the latter missing out on a good century as Bethel was out for 91.
Despite the wicket, Duckett did not stop his lethal batting and he continued to smash India’s bowlers all over the park and scored 141 runs, the highest individual score at Lord’s, surpassing the previous record of the great Sir Vivian Richards who had scored 138 runs.
He was well supported by Joe Root, who played another unbeaten inning of 71*, and Jos Buttler’s quickfire 41 off 13 balls helped England post their highest score of 387/3 in 50 overs. Gurnoor Brar had the worst outing, 97/0 in his 10 overs.
Rohit Sharma special at Lord’s
Chasing the target, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made a great start to the run chase, both looked in good shape and scored half-centuries in good style. Gill was the first wicket to fall as he was dismissed by Adil Rashid at the score of 77 and he missed out on a century as the 146-run partnership was broken.
Rohit Sharma finally silenced the critics as he scored a century in 84 balls and shared a partnership of 113 runs in 86 balls with Virat Kohli. As Rohit finally got out on the score of 138 runs in 110 balls, he hit 17 fours and five sixes in his amazing innings.
Kohli, who tried his best to score runs quickly, was out on the score of 74 runs in 60 balls. The pressure was increasing on them with the dismissal of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer within three balls, Sam Curran took the wicket and Kohli was also dismissed by Curran. India’s hopes of victory also diminished as they scored 360/7 in 50 overs.
“We gave away too many runs”- Shubman Gill criticized India’s bowlers
Shubman Gill criticized his bowlers for conceding too many runs in the first innings and pointed out that this was the turning point of the match. He believed that the run chase would continue if he had wickets in hand.
Shubman Gill said, “We gave away too many runs in the last few overs and that’s where the game went away from us. We knew that if we had wickets in our hands, we would have been in the game. (Positive) Almost everyone scored runs in the match. In this match, we did not bowl well in the powerplay. Both their openers took advantage of that. In the death overs, they took it very far away from us.”
