Even after achieving a spectacular victory over the England national cricket team, the fear of Shubman Gill’s injury remains a bone of contention. Hours after the match in Birmingham, an important update has emerged on the injury of the India captain.

Gill got injured during India’s chase in the opening match of the 3-match ODI series at Edgbaston. The captain and opening batsman of the Indian national cricket team retired hurt during the run chase. According to the latest media reports, Gill is fine and is expected to play the next match in Cardiff on 16 July.

India claimed a resounding win over England in Birmingham

Chasing the target of 259 runs, Team India got a spectacular victory over England. With 28 balls to spare and 6 wickets in hand, India got a crucial win over the home team, the first win for the visiting team in the ongoing tour.

It was a much-needed win for the Indian cricket team as they had suffered a 4-0 defeat in the T20I series against England after a 2-0 defeat against Ireland. Since the 2026 T20 World Cup-winning squad was below par in the previous T20 fixtures, the ODI series is a platform for the Blue team to gain momentum and confidence in the white-ball formats.

Team India did a brilliant bounce-back in the first ODI match between India and England.

In the first match of the ongoing 3-match ODI series in Birmingham, the Shubman Gill-led side performed brilliantly in both the innings of the game. England got off to a great start in the first innings with Ben Duckett as the opening batsman, but India soon made a comeback with the help of their fast bowling attack, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar. In the middle stages of the innings, it was Axar Patel who demolished England’s batting order.

Axar Patel was adjudged Player of the Match for taking 4 wickets for 62 runs in 9.5 overs and scoring 57 runs off 52 balls with the bat to give India a crucial win.

After India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in quick succession, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer provided stability to the team with a 109-run partnership.

Gill looked set to claim a century on an individual basis, but pain in his leg did not allow the batsman to continue the innings. When he was batting at 80 out of 75 runs, he had to leave the field. With the help of the physio, the batsmen left the field.

Latest update on Shubman Gill’s injury

The main cause of Shubman Gill’s right posterior discomfort was initially unknown. It was assumed that it could be a hamstring injury.

While there were doubts over Gill’s availability for the next ODI, which will take place in Cardiff on 16 July, RevSportz confirmed via an ‘X’ post on 15 July that ‘Shubman Gill is fine, as we hear from sources’.

A separate BBC claim said he was suffering from cramps after retiring hurt and was expected to be fit for the second ODI in Cardiff on Thursday.

The claim reads, “India’s Shubman Gill has confirmed in an interview with Test Match Special that he was suffering from cramp after being retired on 80* and is expected to be fit for the second ODI in Cardiff on Thursday.”
