The terrible batting performance of the Indian national cricket team against England in the third T20I has shocked the entire cricket world. After India were bowled out for just 76 runs and lost by 125 runs, Moeen Ali said that one of the IPL rules could be one of the major reasons behind their shocking collapse.
The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder believes that the impact player rule in the IPL is having a negative impact on the Indian batsmen. He believes that many players are forgetting how to build innings and deal with difficult situations because they are only getting used to playing aggressive cricket. Earlier, Jofra Archer reflected on the impact of the IPL after India’s defeat to England.

Chasing 202 against England, the Men in Blue had a very bad day at Trent Bridge. The batsmen kept losing wickets while playing aggressive shots against the fast bowlers of England. The entire team was out for just 76 runs in just 11.4 overs. This was India’s biggest defeat in terms of runs in T-20 history.
Indian batsmen have lost the art of batting in T20 cricket: Moeen Ali
After England took a 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-match T20 series, Moeen Ali said international cricket is very different from the IPL. He believes that players cannot try to hit a four or a six on every ball. Sometimes he has to stay at the crease, build partnerships and take the game deeper, especially when the team loses early wickets.
Former England all-rounder Harshit Rana was surprised to be sent in to bat ahead of Shivam Dubey. He also felt that the Men in Blue had chosen too many left-handed batsmen in the playing eleven, making things easier for the England bowlers at Trent Bridge. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni was surrounded by fans after Gautam Gambhir’s India lost to England.

Moeen Ali said on the “Beard Before Wicket” podcast: “The impact player makes a big difference in the IPL. I think they have lost the art of batting in T20 cricket. Whether you are at three wickets in the power play, four wickets, or five wickets, Dube coming in at number eight and sending Rana ahead of him, I know it is because he is a right-hander, but you are picking a team full of left-handers. You can’t do that.”
Moeen Ali blames IPL’s impact player rule for hurting Indian batsmen
Moeen believes that the Impact Player rule has changed the way teams are built in the IPL. Since teams can bring an extra batsman or bowler during a match, players do not always have to face pressure. But in international cricket every player has to perform when required.
The Englishman further explained, “I will always come back to the player making an impact in the IPL. I think it’s taking away the art of batting in conditions and circumstances more than anything. You can’t just come out and bat consistently from the first ball. You have to pick the team well. With an impact player, you don’t have to pick the team well and you can just keep a batsman or a bowler. But it’s not like that when you pick a team in these conditions.”
Adil Rashid blames IPL rules for India’s young players struggling under pressure
England spinner Adil Rashid said some young players are missing the opportunity to learn how to deal with pressure as they have been replaced by an influential player during IPL matches.
Rashid said during the same discussion, “Some players, if they don’t know how to stretch and overcome pressure, they just take over for the impact player, and then when they go to higher levels, when they play internationally, they will never know how to overcome that pressure. When they are in that situation, they don’t know what to do. Not what to do, but they don’t have the experience to do that.”
