Sanju Samson’s T20I future is in question after another disappointing performance with the bat. A few months ago, Sanju Samson was being seen as one of the strongest candidates to become India’s next T20 captain after Suryakumar Yadav.

But now things have changed and his recent performance has raised new questions. However, the Indian cricket team management is still showing confidence in the senior wicketkeeper-batsman, but the pressure is increasing with every match.

BCCI wanted Sanju Samson as T20 captain, but Agarkar supported Shreyas Iyer

Meanwhile, 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi is waiting for his chance and another failure could make it difficult for Samson to retain his place in India’s T20I team.

Amidst constant scrutiny, Dainik Jagran’s sports journalist Abhishek Tripathi has made a shocking revelation that Shreyas Iyer was not the first choice for India’s T20 captaincy among the BCCI board members. He revealed that some people within the BCCI wanted Sanju Samson to take over the T20 captaincy after Suryakumar Yadav.

However, Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar was reportedly not in favor of making Samson the captain due to his inconsistent performances. And that’s why Shreyas Iyer was chosen as the new T20I captain. Now, Samson’s recent poor form has made Agarkar’s concerns even more serious.

Big questions raised on Sanju Samson’s form!

Samson’s form has worried many people. During India’s ICC T20 World Cup-winning campaign earlier this year, he was one of the team’s biggest heroes. He scored more than 300 runs in just five innings and played a big role in India winning the trophy on home soil.

He continued the same form into IPL 2026, where he had another impressive season. Samson scored 477 runs in 13 innings for Chennai Super Kings in the tournament. But after his return to international cricket, he failed to perform well with the bat despite strong support.

The Kerala star was out for just 5 and 0 in the two-match T20 series against Ireland. His struggles continued in the first T20I against England in Durham, where he managed only one run. Parthiv Patel made frank comment on Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s India debut.

Even after these failures, the Indian team management has decided to continue supporting the experienced batsman instead of giving a chance to Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The teenage star is still waiting to make his international debut, but he will have to wait for his opportunities.

Dinesh Karthik breaks silence on Sanju Samson’s poor form

Well, Dinesh Karthik admitted that Sanju Samson is under pressure after failing in three consecutive innings. However, the former Indian wicketkeeper believes that India should continue to support Samson as he proved himself with a brilliant performance in the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

“Once again Sanju Samson has had a bit of a failure. Now three innings in a row means the calls are coming good and loud for Vaibhav Suryavanshi, but I would still say that Sanju Samson, the best player of the tournament in the World Cup, is under pressure,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

He further said, “I know the whole cricket world is going to be like, ‘Vaibhav Suryavanshi, when is he going to come?’ It’s understandable, but I still hope they will support someone like Sanju Samson because, because of the pressure at the World Cup a few months ago, he got the job done, so we have to support him.”
