Ben Stokes’s retirement from international cricket has not only shocked the cricket world but has also started a new debate in England. Many fans were emotional after one of England’s greatest all-rounders announced he was retiring from his career, but Andrew Strauss was critical of the timing.
The former England captain believes that Stokes announced his decision at the wrong time. England were still struggling in the series-deciding third and final Test against New Zealand when Stokes revealed that the match would be the last of his international career.

Questions were raised on Ben Stokes’ decision to retire in the middle of the New Zealand Test.
The three-match Test series was tied 1–1 and England still had a chance to avoid losing the series. The team required complete concentration during the final two days of the match, but Ben Stokes informed his teammates of his decision on the morning of the fourth day at Trent Bridge.
Later the same day, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) officially announced his retirement while the match was still in progress. Before the official announcement, England head coach Brendon McCullum had tried to stop Ben Stokes from retiring.
As soon as the news broke, all the attention focused on Ben Stokes’ retirement and England had to pay the price for it as they suffered a crushing 160-run defeat on the final day as New Zealand sealed a historic series 2-1 win.

Andrew Strauss raised questions on Ben Stokes’ big retirement decision
Commenting on the decision, Andrew Strauss believes that this was not the right situation for such a big announcement. The former England captain believes every great player has the right to choose how his career ends, but the announcement should have come either before the Test started or after it ended.
He said that Stokes’ announcement has increased extra emotions and unnecessary pressure in the team and almost every discussion is about the departure of this all-rounder.
“Everyone has the right to bow out on their own terms, and no one has earned it more than Ben, but making the announcement before or after the game seems a more sensible approach,” Strauss was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
When you are in the middle of the match the only thing that matters is the performance of the team. It feels like a huge distraction for a team that was struggling to avoid series defeat, and the cricket in the last season made it feel like ‘end of tenure’.”
Michael Vaughan stunned as Ben Stokes leaves England emotionally
Many compared Stokes’ departure to Stuart Broad’s retirement during the 2023 Ashes. Broad also announced his retirement before the end of the Test match, but he helped England win the match and level the Ashes series. However, Stokes ended his international career with defeat.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan was not happy with such an end to one of England’s greatest cricketers, saying that Stokes deserved a better end to his memorable career. “It’s a strange way to dismiss one of England’s greatest cricketers,” Vaughan said.
Notably, Stokes ended his international career as one of only two players in Test cricket history, along with Jacques Kallis, to score more than 7,000 runs and take more than 250 wickets. He played 122 Tests for England and scored 7,273 runs and took 252 wickets.
