The outgoing England captain confirmed that he wants to continue playing county cricket for Durham and is also open to opportunities elsewhere in the franchise circuit. His comments have naturally fueled speculation about a possible IPL comeback after several years away from the tournament.
Given his reputation as one of the finest all-rounders of his generation, he will still attract the interest of several franchises if he opts to throw his name back into the auction pool.
Why did Ben Stokes stop playing in IPL?
Stokes last played in the IPL during the 2023 season for Chennai Super Kings. CSK had acquired his services for Rs 16.25 crore, but injuries prevented him from making a meaningful impact. He played only two matches before returning to England ahead of the international summer.
Ahead of the IPL 2024 season, he voluntarily withdrew from the tournament to manage his workload and focus on England’s tough Test schedule.
After this he took a big decision by deciding not to register before the IPL 2025 mega auction. At the time, Ben Stokes revealed that he wanted to reduce his cricket commitments and take better care of his body. Having spent much time recovering from knee and hamstring injuries, the England all-rounder believed limiting franchise commitments would help extend his career at the highest level.
His priority then was to continue representing England for as long as possible, especially in view of major Test assignments and Ashes cricket.
Ben Stokes’ potential return delayed due to IPL rules
Many fans were hoping that Ben Stokes would make a comeback soon after being left out of the 2025 mega auction, but IPL rules prevented that from happening.
Under the current rules of the league, any overseas player who does not register for the mega auction becomes ineligible for entry into the following year’s player auction.
As a result, Stokes’ decision to skip the IPL 2025 mega auction automatically ruled him out of the IPL 2026 mini auction as well.
The regulation was introduced to ensure players’ commitment and to discourage high-profile foreign cricketers from entering the auction only when convenient.
When can Ben Stokes actually return to IPL?
The first real chance for Stokes to make a comeback in the IPL is the IPL 2027 mini auction. Since they skipped the IPL 2025 mega auction, they were barred from participating in the 2026 auction cycle. However, the restriction applies only to the immediate next auction window rather than the entire cycle.
Provided he complies with the IPL registration requirements and decides to make himself available, Stokes could once again enter the auction pool ahead of IPL 2027.
This will make him 36 years of age, but given the value he brings as a genuine match-winning all-rounder, age alone is unlikely to discourage the franchise.
Why IPL teams may still target Ben Stokes?
Despite his limited appearances in recent years, Stokes remains one of the most decorated overseas players to appear in the IPL.
In 45 IPL matches, he has scored 935 runs, including two centuries, while also taking 28 wickets. His most memorable season came in 2017 with Rising Pune Supergiant when he won the Most Valuable Player award after making huge contributions with both bat and ball.
His ability to impact matches in multiple departments, coupled with his leadership experience, still makes him an attractive option for franchises looking for proven match-winners.
At the moment, there is no indication that Stokes is actively planning a return to the IPL. However, with international cricket no longer occupying their calendar and the IPL 2027 auction representing their next point of entry, the door is firmly open for a comeback.
