Matthew Hollard wins POTM after Ireland beats India: India faced Ireland in the first match of the two-match T20I series at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Stormont, Belfast. The Men in Blue had the worst start as the Irish team defeated the visiting team for the first time in all formats. Shreyas Iyer had his worst start under the captaincy and suffered a defeat against Ireland.
It is one of the biggest upsets in T20Is as Ireland beat the reigning T20 world champions by 34 runs. Lorcan Tucker’s inexperienced side dared to dream of defeating the world champions and taking the lead in the 2-match T20 series. In the match, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bowl first as India made some changes in the team.
Harshit Rana made a great comeback
After being asked to bat first, Ireland’s score was 51/4 at the start of the game, with Harshit Rana dismissing the two openers, Tim Tector and Ross Adair for 12 and 17 respectively. Arshdeep Singh picked out Harry Tector for a duck in three balls. Harshit Rana was the best among the bowlers taking three wickets for 24 runs in his four overs.
For the Irish team, captain Tucker scored a half-century and also shared a partnership of 64 runs from 44 balls with Gareth Delany, who was out for 8 and out for 49, as Ireland finished at 182/9 in 20 overs.
Ireland created history against India
Chasing the target, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma made a good start, but were dismissed for five runs by debutant Jai Mundra. Abhishek scored a half-century in 19 balls but returned to the pavilion on the very next ball. Except Abhishek, no batsman could cross the 30 run mark.
India lost half the team for 91 runs, and a small partnership from Shivam Dubey and Axar Patel took the game closer, but Axar was out for 24 and Axar was back for 15. Ishan Kishan could not fire as he was out on one run. Shreyas Iyer also failed to cause trouble and was out after scoring three runs.

Matthew Hollard was the best bowler, taking three wickets for 28 runs in his four overs. The fast bowler was named player of the match for his exceptional performance against the reigning T20 World Cup champions. Matthew Hollard felt really proud after his excellent match-winning performance.
Matthew Hollard said, “To be honest, I never expected it. I always knew I had it, but I never thought I would make my debut against India. It’s a dream come true. My family comes from Joburg. It’s a bit of a dream.” [On when the ball went up in the air off his first ball] After that first ball, I turned to Harry and said, ‘First ball is done.’
He added, “And then when the ball went in the air, my heart stopped for a moment. Really, really special. I’ve really been wanting to come to Ireland since 2019. Then Covid came and there were complications. There was a shock on my part. My brother came here first and said you have to come.”
“And then the way Cricket Ireland looked after me, it’s amazing. [On his family] I haven’t seen them in a while and nothing could be better than seeing them here. Matthew Hollard concluded, “He saw me take the hat and then cheered me on, it’s incredible.”
