The schedule of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to change. Keeping an eye on the climate and weather conditions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering choosing a new window from next year to host the league.
Amid speculations about the possible timeframe, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has revealed the exact window they are preferring to host the tournament in 2027. If their plans go as per the prescribed instructions, next year’s tournament could start from March 10 and end through the finals on May 15.

When will IPL 2027 start?
During a recent conversation with news agency PTI, the BCCI Secretary highlighted the plans they are currently working on, including an early start of the tournament. Some other reports claim that a Rich Cash League will be organized from next year with an expanded number of matches.
However, Devjit Saikia has denied that factors such as total number of matches are directly linked to various factors such as international fixtures and availability of foreign cricketers. Therefore, there is no possibility of seeing a large number of matches in the 2027 season as of now.
BCCI Secretary reveals possible timelines
“This year, the IPL started around March 29, and it was over by May 31. The only thing we are discussing is that in the final stage of the tournament, after May 15, there are issues regarding the weather, especially in some areas, there is a possibility of rain or the start of the pre-monsoon season or on the other hand, there is hot weather, hot conditions, which are not very conducive neither for the players, nor for the crowd or for the fans.” Saikia told PTI.

Saikia further mentioned that he has already asked the General Manager of Game Development to monitor the windows so that they can start the league by March 10. If the league opens in early March, it could end around the second week of May.
If the board can do this, they can effectively avoid the adverse weather conditions, which had become unbearable during the last season, mostly due to hot and humid conditions.
Is the number of matches going to increase?
“From next year, we will make an effort and I have already instructed our general manager sports development to look at the window if we can start it by March 10 so we want to finish it by May 15 so that there are no adverse weather conditions before the playoffs and finals of the last stage of IPL 2027, which will be the 28th edition of the IPL,” he said.
Confirming that there will be no increase in the total number of matches in the next season of the Indian Premier League, Devjit Saikia further said, “The second thing is as far as increase in the number of matches is concerned, that is not possible at this time because we have to consider many other factors with respect to different players coming from different countries, so at this moment there is no discussion about increasing it from 74 to 94, that is not happening immediately.”
