Chasing a target of 195 against Afghanistan in the first ODI at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala, India suffered an early blow when former captain Rohit Sharma was run out due to a misunderstanding with opening partner Shubman Gill.
The experienced opener looked to be in good form after suffering an injury during his brief stay at the crease and helped India get off to a positive start by hitting two fours and a six. However, a breakdown in communication between the two batsmen brought Rohit’s innings to an abrupt end and Afghanistan got a crucial breakthrough at a time when India looked to be in complete control of the target.

Rohit Sharma reacts angrily to Shubman Gill’s costly run out after confusion
The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the sixth over when India was at 46 without loss. Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar bowled a length ball outside the off stump, which Rohit gently pushed to the left of midwicket. Taking a quick single, Rohit immediately moved past the striker’s end and was already halfway down the pitch.
However, Gill found himself blocked by the bowler’s follow-through and hesitated before replying. By the time he signaled Rohit to return, the former Indian captain had gone far down the pitch.
Rashid Khan reacted quickly in the field and collected the ball before throwing it towards wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The Afghanistan keeper removed the bails in one fell swoop as Rohit made a desperate attempt to find his ground with a full-length dive.

Although the umpires called out the decision, Rohit had already started going back to the dressing room. Replays confirmed that he was far away from the crease when the stumps broke. The dismissal ended Rohit’s innings of 16 runs off 16 balls, which included two fours and a six.
What caught attention was Rohit’s reaction immediately after this. The opener looked unhappy with the misunderstanding and walked back without looking at Gill, highlighting his frustration at having given away his wicket in this manner.
The run-out was particularly unusual as Rohit Sharma had rarely been out like this in his entire career. In fact, this was only the second time he had been run out in international cricket in the last three years, both instances being against Afghanistan in 2024 and 2026.
This is Rohit’s first run-out in ODI cricket since 2019 against the West Indies, ending a streak of seven years without such a dismissal in the format. Interestingly, Shubman Gill has now been at the non-striker’s end for Rohit’s two run-outs, placing him in the list along with MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina, while only Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan have been involved in three run-outs each.

Rohit Sharma has completed 16,000 runs as an opener in international cricket.
Despite his disappointing outing, Rohit Sharma achieved a major individual feat during the innings. The former India captain became only the second Indian opener and seventh batsman overall to complete 16,000 international runs as an opening batsman.
This historic achievement has further cemented Rohit Sharma’s position among the greatest opening batsmen in cricket history. Over the past decade, he has established himself as one of the most influential players at the top of the order across all formats, combining consistency with the ability to score at pace.
Rohit is now just 119 runs behind Virender Sehwag, who remains India’s leading run-scorer as an opening batsman in international cricket. Given his continued presence in India’s ODI plans, Rohit may soon reach the top of the list.
