Team India batsman Shubman Gill has recorded the second highest batting average among Test captains after crossing the 1,000-run mark. The right-handed batsman has made a brilliant start to his captaincy career and has joined an elite group of leaders in Test cricket history.

Gill reached the milestone during the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadvendra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. He played a crucial inning of 126 runs, which helped India post a strong score in the first innings and further cemented his impressive record as a Test captain.
Shubman Gill reaches second place in the list of elite Test captains
Shubman Gill’s century against Afghanistan took his batting average as Test captain to 82.76. The Indian captain is second among all captains in Test history to have scored at least 1,000 runs while leading his teams.

Gill is now second only to Australian great Don Bradman to hold the record as captain with an average of 101.51. Indian captain has gone ahead of legends like Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Steve Smith.

Gill became the fastest captain to reach 1,000 Test runs at the time
Shubman Gill has continued to create records since becoming India’s Test captain. His strong run-scoring form helped him become the fastest captain in Test history to reach 1,000 runs in terms of time, achieving the milestone in just 351 days.
Gill completed 1,000 Test runs as captain in his 15th innings, making him the second-fastest Indian captain to reach the milestone in terms of innings. Among Indian captains, only Sunil Gavaskar reached this figure the fastest, he did so in 14 innings.

Gill has shown remarkable consistency since taking over the role and has scored six Test centuries in just nine matches as captain. His performances have played a vital role in India’s success in the longest format.
The Indian batsman enjoyed a great tour of England and scored 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. He scored four centuries during the series, including his career best score of 269 runs. He also performed strongly against the West Indies, scoring 192 runs at an average of 96.00, including a century.
