Suryakumar Yadav has been removed as the T20I captain of the India national cricket team today as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads for three different tours, Ireland, England and Asian Games 2026, where Shreyas Iyer was named as the captain of the newly created team for the upcoming tours of the shorter format.
After Shreyas was made the captain, former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin commented on Sky’s removal from the post of captain. He believes that the former India captain should be given at least one more series because, as a leader, Suryakumar Yadav has been excellent for the Men in Blue. He has given the team the glory of T20 World Cup 2026.

“If you ask me, it’s a historic day in selection. Next time something like this comes up, it will be taken as an example. I’m putting myself in Surya’s shoes and thinking about it. Well, obviously, my batting form has disappointed me in the last 18 months or 15 months or whatever.”

Ravi Ashwin said that his performance as a batsman in the T20 World Cup was not the best but he led the team well. “I’m not yet in the form that I could have been. But then, I managed to win the T20 World Cup for the country. I haven’t had the greatest World Cup as a batsman,” Ashwin said while speaking on ESPNcricinfo.

“But of course, like everyone in the team, like the coach, like the vice-captain, like the best performing batsman, best performing bowler, he has also been the best performing captain, right? He has played his role. I watched Ajit’s press conference, and I liked what he said, what we are planning for the next two years, which is a good way to look at it.”
Ashwin also pointed to the fact that he deserves more chances and respect from the India national cricket team, as he raised the issue that no other T20 World Cup-winning captain has been dropped before as India did with Suryakumar Yadav.

“But is there a possibility that they could have given Surya a little more time? And if you think he is not included in the 11, could he have been given the big England series so that he can prove himself as a batsman once again that he belongs there? I think he deserved it after achieving such a big feat in his career.”
“Can we keep the big stalwarts in their place? Is there any instance where a T20 World Cup-winning captain has been dropped without any ultimatum? I am sure there has been communication. I have no doubt in that regard.”
“But if you ask me, it’s quite a historic day in selection. Because the next time something like this comes up, it will be used as an example.”
