Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has explained the decision to remove Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain and drop him from the India national cricket team. The move sparked widespread discussion among fans, with the selection committee revealing the reasons for the leadership change and squad reshuffle.

The squad was announced by BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia and Agarkar on Saturday ahead of India’s upcoming white-ball assignments. Shreyas Iyer was named the new T20I captain for the two-match series against Ireland on June 26 and 28, the five-match series in England and the Asian Games in September.
I have talked to him – Ajit Agarkar on removing the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav
Speaking at the press conference, Ajit Agarkar revealed that he personally spoke to Suryakumar Yadav before announcing the change in captaincy. The chief selector said it was important to hold talks with the World Cup-winning captain, but decided not to disclose details of their discussions.

Agarkar said, “Yes, I have spoken to most of the people. When we are taking such a decision, especially when it comes to a World Cup-winning captain. So, it is between them and me. But, yes, I have spoken to them.”
Suryakumar Yadav took over as India’s T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format after the 2024 T20 World Cup. During his tenure, India won 40 of their 52 matches, including the 2026 T20 World Cup, and recorded an impressive win percentage of 80.76.
This is not the easiest discussion to have – Ajit Agarkar on removing Suryakumar Yadav from the post of captain
Ajit Agarkar admitted that removing Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain was a difficult decision. The chief selector said the selection committee discussed the matter carefully, especially because Suryakumar had led India to great success including the T20 World Cup title.

“Obviously, form over the years is important, but he was the captain when we were doing really well, winning a lot of games and ultimately winning the World Cup.”
“We discussed a lot. When someone takes you to the World Cup, it’s not an easy discussion to have,” Agarkar said.
This is the second time in less than a year that India has changed a captain immediately after winning the ICC title. Shubman Gill replaced Rohit Sharma after India’s Champions Trophy win, while Suryakumar lost the T20I captaincy just three months after leading India to another T20 World Cup title.
Shreyas is playing well and has made decision making easy – Ajit Agarkar
Ajit Agarkar said that the decision to appoint Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain was part of the team’s long-term planning. The chief selector said that although IPL performance was not the main factor, Shreyas’ consistent batting helped ease the transition.
“I don’t think IPL form dictated the decision. There was always a conversation about thinking ahead. As I said, as good as Shreyas is playing, especially with the bat, sometimes it makes the decision a little easier,” Agarkar said.
Suryakumar struggled for runs in IPL 2026, scoring 270 runs at an average of 20.76 in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians. Although India won the 2026 T20 World Cup under Surya’s captaincy, he scored 242 runs in nine innings and recorded only one half-century during the tournament.
