A thrilling match concluded at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala. Both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) teams fought hard to get 2 points.
Teams needed those points for a variety of reasons. PBKS wanted to win the match to regain their momentum as a leading team in the IPL 2026 points table, with MI traveling to Himachal Pradesh in search of a consolation win.
Mumbai Indians pull off a heroic win over Punjab Kings
The match went till the last over to find out the winner of the rivalry. At one point in the second innings, MI were in the wrong position until Tilak Verma came on.
The middle-order batsman, who registered a century in the ongoing Indian Premier League, scored over fifty for Mumbai Indians tonight and gifted the home team, Punjab Kings, their 5th defeat in IPL 2026. After tonight’s game PBKS are currently on a five-match losing streak.
Tilak Verma is the hero for MI tonight
Batting first, Punjab Kings scored 200 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. Prabhsimran Singh played important innings at the top of the batting order to increase the run rate of the team. Singh’s 57-run knock, and a late cameo from Azmatullah Umarzai (38 off 17) helped the team claim a competitive total.
The inclusion of Shardul Thakur in MI’s eleven proved to be a surprise, taking 4 wickets including two in a single over. In one over, he dismissed well-set Prabhsimran Singh and PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer and immediately made the match spicy. In the second innings, when PBKS was chasing the target of 201, Rohit Sharma played an unusually slow innings; 25 runs at a strike rate of 96.15.
That sluggish innings has led to another defeat for Mumbai Indians this season, but thanks to Tilak Verma and Will Jacques, who stepped up and delivered timely blows. Ultimately MI won the match by 6 wickets on the second last ball of the match. Tilak Verma remained unbeaten on 75 off 33, and Will Jacques remained unbeaten on 25 off 10.
Tough pill to swallow: Shreyas Iyer, PBKS captain
“Well, absolutely tough pill to swallow, but I don’t want to doubt any position here because it was a great game of cricket. Well-fought game. He (Tilak) played amazing, he was selecting his shots very well, and he operated the field well, so credit to him. (On Azmat) Certainly, at one point, we were looking around 170 to 180, and from there, he just Changed the momentum towards us,’ Shreyas Iyer said after the match.
He further added, “That scoop of sixes and from the 16th or 17th over, we gained momentum and to get to 200 was a commendable performance for them. (Taking on RCB in a one-day game?) Definitely excited for the next opportunity. It’s an afternoon game, and we have to win two out of two. It’s going to be an exciting two games. Can’t wait to play them.”
