Tamim Iqbal reflects on Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup controversy
Tamim acknowledged that Bangladesh should have handled the situation differently and insisted there was still enough room to find a workable solution with the ICC. The former opening batsman also reflected on the emotional significance of World Cup qualification for Bangladesh cricket and recalled the nationwide celebration after the team secured qualification for the 1999 ODI World Cup.
“When the (T20) World Cup issue came up, I was probably the first one to speak. What the previous Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) administration did, the way it handled it, was not right. The ICC was generous, there was scope to find a solution. We should have found it. That celebration brought kids into cricket, everyone wanted to be Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Khalid Mashud, Akram Khan. And we gave the World Cup without proper conversation. Given that there may be players in it that will never play in the World Cup again, I did not take it well. Tamim said.
Tamim spoke openly on BCB-BCCI relations
Tamim also spoke positively about the current relationship between the BCB and BCCI and revealed that he shares a strong personal bond with current BCCI president Mithun Manhas from their IPL days.
“About BCCI, I have played a lot of cricket with Mithun Manhas. In the IPL, we were in the same team, he has come to Bangladesh many times to play in the Dhaka League. There is a very good rapport. The security of the country is absolutely fantastic at the moment. There is no issue, there is no security threat, and that has never been the case for the Indian cricket team. When India comes here, the entire stadium is packed. People love that competition. I personally don’t think BCB And there is a real issue here with the BCCI. This would be a great way to take the next step forward.” Tamim said.
Tamim points to deeper issues in Bangladesh cricket
Apart from the World Cup controversy, Tamim also criticized the state of domestic cricket in Bangladesh under the previous administration. He claimed that many domestic tournaments were affected due to administration issues and alleged that many cricketers did not receive payments.
According to Tamim, the situation became so serious that several clubs boycotted competitions before an investigation into the previous board’s functioning could begin. Now leading the interim BCB setup, Tamim said his primary focus is to rebuild Bangladesh cricket and ensure that similar controversies do not harm the country’s cricket future again.
