The race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has become absolutely intense as the tournament reaches its final stages. Teams are not only fighting to qualify for the playoffs but are also desperate to finish in the top two in the points table, making every game a knockout.
Being in the top two gives teams a big advantage in the Indian Premier League. The top two teams get an additional chance to reach the final through Qualifier 1. Even if they lose a match, they still get another chance to reach the final.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Leading the race to make top-2 in IPL 2026
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are currently looking the strongest in the race for a top two finish in the ongoing IPL 2026. SRH have played fearless cricket throughout the season, and their aggressive batting style has helped them post an excellent net run rate (NRR) of +0.737.

They are on top of the points table with 14 points from 11 matches so far. Now, the Orange Army need only 2 wins in their remaining 3 matches to virtually guarantee a top-two finish.

Even if Sunrisers Hyderabad loses a game, their strong NRR gives them a big advantage over other teams fighting for the same spots due to their aggressive batting approach.
‘Three-in-four’ club: RCB, RR, PBKS, and GT
Next comes the biggest battle of four dangerous teams of this season, which includes Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
At present, all four teams are in almost the same position for the top two places. If RCB, RR, PBKS and GT want to have a strong chance of finishing in the top two in the IPL 2026 points table, they will have to win at least three of their remaining four matches.
Both RCB and RR have shown great form at various stages this season, but consistency has been their biggest problem. Now, the defending champions and 2008 IPL champions cannot afford another poor performance as every defeat could push them down the table.
Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans have also been one of the most dangerous teams this season. BOT PBKS and GT surprised everyone with their fearless cricket but they lost the momentum at the crucial stage. Now, second-placed Punjab and fifth-placed GT also need some big wins to improve their NRR to finish in the top two in the group stage.

Tough road for Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings is in the toughest position among all the playoff contenders for IPL 2026. The five-time IPL champions still have a chance to finish in the top two, but for this they will now have to win all their remaining four matches.
Even a defeat could almost end sixth-placed CSK’s hopes of a top-two finish, but they could still reach the playoffs if they continue their form.
nrr factor
Another big factor in this race is the Net Run Rate (NRR). Since multiple teams can finish with the same points, the NRR can decide who will top the table.
Because of this, teams are now looking to win by bigger margins, and five of these six teams have no margin for error at this stage in the ongoing tournament.
