15 year old Vaibhav Suryavanshi is just a few steps away from debuting in Team India. If reports are to be believed, the budding batting talent may play his first match for the senior cricket team during the Ireland tour or the Asian Games.
Experts have different opinions on the possible debut of Vaibhav Suryavanshi at the age of just 15. While some cricket experts suggest the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to hone the talent, former Australia captain Aaron Finch has expressed a different opinion.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi is likely to debut in Team India at the age of 15.
The debate is about timing. The left-handed batsman has been in tremendous form since the last season of the Indian Premier League. After the IPL 2025 season, the Bihar-born came into limelight by winning the ICC Under-19 World Cup for India. In the final, he scored a record-breaking century against England and then he continued the same form for Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
If BCCI allows Vaibhav Suryavanshi to debut for Team India at the age of just 15, he will break the record of the great Sachin Tendulkar, who played his first match for the country at the age of 16 years and 205 days.
Aaron Finch gives his opinion on Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Team India debut
Aaron Finch said that perhaps the time has come to introduce Vaibhav Suryavanshi to the top order of the game.
“Is this the right time to introduce him? Maybe this is the right time to introduce him to the team. Give him some time. But it’s also really important that you respect the players who are working for India, game in, game out. I think playing cricket for India is the most pressure you can feel,” the former opening batsman said on ESPN Cricinfo.
Finch also said that the selection process should be fair, as the current players of the team have done a lot for the team.
“They’re coming off a World Cup win. So, respecting that and with an understanding that, yes, there are good players around a very good superstar youngster, but these guys have done it on the biggest stage, so I think you still have to respect that and wait for the opportunity to present itself,” he said.
Just let the kid play: Aaron Finch
In the final decision, Aaron Finch boldly asked the board to allow Vaibhav Suryavanshi to play. The former cricketer further said that Vaibhav still has a lot of things to learn.
Finch said, “Just let the kid play. Let him remain a young player and continue to learn the game. He’s obviously an incredibly fast learner, whether it’s technically or tactically, but he still has a lot to learn, and I like the fact that he comes up with different plans at times.”
He said, “It shows his development as a player, as a young man; it’s really incredible skill, and there’s no doubt the opportunity will come. But don’t put too much pressure on the young player. Just let him play.”
