“We’ve been conservative”: Stephen Fleming on the return of Dewald Brevis
head coach Stephen Fleming has shared a positive update about the young South African batsman dewald brevisWho has missed the initial phase of the tournament due to side strain. The 22-year-old, considered one of the most exciting talents in world cricket, could make a comeback in CSK’s upcoming clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 11.
Speaking after the team’s defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore, Fleming looked quite optimistic. With a five-day break before their next game, CSK have taken a cautious approach to Brevis’ recovery.
“We’re hopeful he’ll be right for the next game. We have five days between the next games. We’ve been conservative, and hopefully these next five days go according to our plan, and he’s ready to go. It’s a big loss, but we’re eager to have him back.” Fleming said.
Management’s decision to be patient shows how important Brevis is to the team. CSK have prioritized long-term fitness rather than recalling him, ensuring that he returns fully fit rather than risking further injury.
Brewis suffered a side strain during a training session before CSK’s season-opening match, which ruled him out at a crucial time when the team needed stability in its batting lineup.
Why does Brevis’ return matter for CSK?
What is encouraging for CSK fans is that Brevis is making good progress in his recovery. Over the past few days, he has gradually increased his participation in training sessions, showing no obvious signs of discomfort.
Ahead of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) clash, he was seen facing throwdowns and taking part in fielding drills. Recently, before the RCB game, he spent about 20 minutes in the nets, handling assistant coach Rajeev Kumar’s balls with ease. His movements appeared effortless, and there was no sign of pain for a long time.
Adding to the optimism, Brewis joined his teammates for a casual football session after practice – often a sign that a player is close to being fully fit. These small but important steps show that he is on his way to a comeback soon.
His return for CSK couldn’t have come at a better time.
The team is currently at the bottom of the points table, but has not been able to register a single win so far and is struggling with a negative net run rate. Their batting unit in particular lacks the spark and aggression required in modern T20 cricket.
This is where brevis becomes important. Since joining CSK midway through IPL 2025, he has made a strong impression with his fearless approach. Scoring 225 runs at a strike rate of 180 in just six innings, he soon established himself as a game-changer in the middle order.
His ability to accelerate his scoring rate and take on bowlers in pressure situations earned him the nickname “Baby AB”, a reference to his style. AB de Villiers. More importantly, it earned him the trust of the franchise, which led to him being retained for the 2026 season.
CSK is also without ms dhoniWho is still recovering from a calf injury. His absence has left a noticeable gap in leadership and composure, especially in moments of crisis.
With Dhoni sidelined and the batting unit struggling, Brevis’ return could provide the much-needed balance and firepower. He not only strengthens the lineup but also allows CSK to field a more settled combination of foreign players.
