Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) won against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 10th match of the ongoing IPL season. LSG captain Rishabh Pant hit the winning four in the final over, but fast bowler Avesh Khan’s unusual celebration near the boundary line sparked controversy.

Pant chased the target by playing an unbeaten inning of 68 runs. Lucknow Super Giants chased the target of 157 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday, April 5. On the final delivery, the southpaw hit a four, but Avesh Khan started celebrating even before the ball reached the boundary line.

According to cricket laws, interference by a non-fielder can result in a dead-ball call and a penalty of five runs. If the umpire had given a penalty, Lucknow Super Giants would have needed six runs from two balls. Sunrisers Hyderabad did not make any appeal regarding this incident.

Did Avesh Khan violate cricket rules?

Avesh Khan did not break the rules. Rule 19 states that the ball becomes dead immediately after crossing or landing beyond the boundary line. Since the shot touched the mid-off fielder and went straight outside the boundary line, the umpires considered it as a boundary.

Umpires award a five-run penalty under Law 41 only when a player commits foul play with the intention of deceiving or obstructing the opposition. Avesh did not stop any SRH fielder from hitting the boundary by hitting the ball near the dugout. Therefore, the umpires ignored the initial celebration.

Some analysts and fans believed that implementing the rule could have changed the situation, as LSG might have needed more runs to win.

Sunrisers Hyderabad set a target of 156 runs

Lucknow Super Giants bowled well in the beginning of the match. Rishabh Pant won the toss and chose fielding. Mohammed Shami dismissed Abhishek Sharma for zero and Travis Head for seven runs. Prince Yadav bowled Ishan Kishan for one run. Liam Livingstone scored 14 runs in 20 balls.

Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy saved the innings of Sunrisers Hyderabad by making a partnership of 116 runs. Klaasen scored 62 runs on 41 balls. Nitish Kumar Reddy scored 56 runs but was dismissed by M Siddhartha. Avesh Khan took two important wickets in the nineteenth over.

Sunrisers Hyderabad ended their innings at 156/9. Aiden Markram scored 45 runs in 27 balls during the chase. Mitchell Marsh contributed 14 runs. Rishabh Pant led Lucknow Super Giants to victory with one ball to spare on Sunday.

Pant scored unbeaten 68 runs with the help of nine fours in 50 balls. Mohammed Shami was adjudged player of the match for his bowling. He gave only 9 runs in his four over spell.
