Hat-trick of defeat for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The target of 251 runs set by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Sunday was too much for the former champions. RCB, the defending champions of the current Indian Premier League season (IPL 2026), continued their winning streak by defeating their arch-rivals by 43 runs.

At their own M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB batsmen went on a rampage against CSK’s bowling department. The total score of 250 was proof of how much trouble the Yellows bowlers had to face when facing the opposition batsmen.

Tim David, the main destroyer in the RCB vs CSK IPL 2026 match in Bengaluru

Tim David was the main player with the bat for Royal Challengers Bangalore, scoring an unbeaten 70 off 25 balls with a whopping strike rate of 280.0. Maintaining the explosive hitting, the Australian all-rounder hit three fours and eight sixes in the process.

RCB captain Rajat Patidar, who led the team to its first IPL title in 2025, proved why he is considered one of the most prolific domestic batsmen in the shortest format of the game.

Patidar provided good support to Tim David by hitting six sixes and one four in his unbeaten inning of 48 runs off 19 balls. Before David and Patidar’s batting performance, it was Devdutt Patidar who started the run feast.

The in-form batsman, who has scored plenty of runs in domestic tournaments ahead of IPL 2026, scored 50 off 29. Opener Phil Salt also did not lag behind and scored 46 runs facing 30 balls. Virat Kohli (28) was the only RCB top-order batsman who looked out of rhythm tonight.

CSK tried but failed miserably

Shivam Dubey became the most expensive bowler for Chennai Super Kings, giving away 30 runs in 2 overs with one wicket remaining. Jamie Overton’s economy rate was slightly lower than Dubey, as he conceded 42 runs in 3 overs. Noor Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj and Matt Henry all gave an average of 12 runs in their respective bowling spells.

Under immense pressure, CSK lost their top-order batsmen inside the power play. Sanju Samson, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ayush Mhatre were out cheaply in the run chase. The exception to the Super Kings batting order was Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 50 off 25. Prashant Veer and Jamie Overton got 43 and 37 runs respectively. In response to RCB’s 250 runs, CSK could only score 207 runs for 10 wickets.

Rituraj Gaikwad takes responsibilities on his shoulders

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said after the match, “To be honest, I was also surprised. Sarfaraz, Prashant Veer, Jamie Overton and even to some extent Shivam Dubey put up a great fight. So I think, maybe I could have contributed more at the top of the order. You never know, we could have chased it down.”

“I think Anshul almost got his (Tim David) wicket. It’s unfortunate to have an illegal delivery, but yes, after that, he hit it all over the park, and, as you rightly said, hats off to him (for not taking his chances in the field).”

“As you rightly said, if you had taken Virat Kohli early, I think maybe he would have had the pace for us. But I think the game was still in our hands till the 13th, 14th over and that’s when the momentum really changed,” he said.
