Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra Attracted attention with his witty remarks addressing the franchise’s recent trade Mumbai Indians Ahead of ipl 2026. Gujarat traded Caribbean all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford Mumbai in an all-cash deal, increased their purse but did not bring any players in return.
The move once again raised questions over GT’s strategy of trading players in exchange for cash, especially when dealing with powerhouse franchises like Mumbai Indians.
Ashish Nehra’s funny comment on not finding any big player
During a pre-season press conference in Ahmedabad, Nehra was asked why Gujarat Titans often sell players to Mumbai Indians without acquiring big-name cricketers in return. Responding in his trademark light-hearted manner, Nehra said:
“Had it been in our hands, we would have brought Jasprit Bumra. He did not agree.”
(If we had it in our hands, we would have brought it) Jasprit boomrah. They will not agree.)
The comment drew a lot of laughs and quickly went viral, as Nehra admitted candidly – Mumbai Indians will never part with one of their biggest match-winners and India’s premier fast bowler.

All-cash deal boosts GT’s auction budget
The trade involving Sherfane Rutherford was a pure cash deal, meaning Gujarat Titans did not receive any players in return. Instead, the franchise added financial flexibility to its purse, which could be crucial for the upcoming mini-auction or mid-season adjustment.
This is not the first time GT has adopted such a strategy. In 2024, the franchise had given permission hardik pandya Mumbai Indians returned in a similar all-cash deal, which also strengthened their budget but was no direct replacement.
Such moves indicate a clear approach, building long-term team depth through better auction investments rather than directly swapping players.
Reality of IPL trades exposed by Nehra
Nehra’s comment, though humorous, highlights a stark reality of IPL trades. Big franchises like Mumbai Indians are unlikely to release their marquee players, especially proven match-winners like Bumrah.
As a result, teams like Gujarat Titans often have to compromise on financial gain rather than acquiring high-profile players in such deals. The comments also reflect the competitive but respectful dynamics between the franchises, where negotiations are driven by team priorities rather than fan expectations.
