Yograj Singh made sharp comment on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s decision to take premature retirement.

Yograj Singh, father of former Indian cricketer and legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, is once again in the headlines for his outspoken views. His latest comments regarding why players are retiring early in the modern era have sparked a major controversy.

The 68-year-old has surprisingly blamed wives and children for players’ decisions to end their professional careers early. He completely disregarded the age factor, as Yograj Singh believes that as long as a player has the hunger, passion and discipline, he can continue playing for as long as he wants.

In a bold but problematic statement, Yograj Singh openly suggested that women should not come between a player and his career as they push him to focus on home and children, even if they are physically fit and capable of performing at the top level.

“I have seen people in India saying, ‘After 40 years, we are getting old,'” Yograj Singh was quoted as saying by InsideSport. When women turn 30 they go out of shape and they say their children have outgrown them. What can we do? I started this regimen at my gym, where I am a director, and I deliberately decided to help seniors get in shape. How can one link playing games with age?”

The former cricketer said, “You know what happens: the women in your house, your wives, start training you, saying now is the time to retire, time to take care of the family and children. So, I believe that women should not come in the way of the great potential of an athlete, fakir or player; these two have no religion, no war (elite men and sportsmen have no religion); they belong to God. Meanwhile, the legendary all-rounder’s father has shifted his focus to modern-day legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Although he did not directly involve their families, he described the age factor in India as a “funny” concept, saying “they want to quit”.

Taking an indirect dig at Rohit and Kohli, who now play only ODI cricket, Yograj said, “Damn life. Make the world realize that you are the best, that you are indispensable. Even if you are fifty years old and still scoring double centuries, no one will leave you.”
