This year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to start with many new rules. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already issued several new rules on the team’s practice sessions ahead of the matches to be played in the IPL 2026 season. A series of rules regarding ball replacement are also expected to be introduced ahead of the tournament. The board will issue a clear guideline to all ten teams of the tournament, explaining when teams will be allowed to change the ball mid-match.
Cricbuzz reported that there will be several important topics to discuss in the IPL captains’ meeting with the board, including ball substitution rules.
BCCI will hold a meeting with all the captains of IPL 2026
“According to the BCCI release sent to the franchises by Cricbuzz on Tuesday, Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon – the BCCI match referee and head of the panel of umpires respectively – will address the captains. The meeting is scheduled from 4:30 pm to 6 pm on Wednesday (March 25),” the media report read.
There was a slight lack of clarity regarding the ball replacement rule in the previous edition of the tournament. Ahead of the 2026 season, the board wants to ensure that all teams have a clear idea of when they will be allowed to ask the umpire to change the ball.
According to Rule 4.4 (ball not found or rendered unplayable):
If, during play, the ball cannot be located or recovered or the umpires agree that it has become unfit for play through normal use, the umpires shall replace it with a ball that is less worn than the previous ball requiring replacement. When the ball is changed, the umpire will inform the batsman and the fielding captain.
The team bowling second can request a change of ball only once after the completion of the 10th over. The bowling captain may request a change. This applies only once during the second innings of an evening game, regardless of whether there is dew on the outfield or not.
This request must be made after the over has ended, not during the over. The umpire will replace the ball with another ball with similar wear and tear. Additionally, the umpire can also change the ball at his discretion at any time during the match.
How will the Indian Premier League 2026 teams benefit from the new rules?
The purpose of setting rules is to maintain balance between two competing teams. It is often seen, especially during evening and night matches, that the other bowling team has trouble with the ball. During the night and evening, dew drops on the grass make the ball wet. The bowler and fielding side use towels to keep the ball dry, so that the bowlers can catch it well.
As the rules are clearly spelled out, fielding sides in IPL 2026 will have clarity as to when they should request the umpires to change the ball.
