Former New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum will remain the head coach of the England cricket team despite poor performances in recent high-profile tournaments. Following their semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, there were doubts over the coach’s future with the national team.
According to a recent report published by The Telegraph Sport, Brendon McCullum has secured his job after talks with Test captain Ben Stokes. It was reported that the head coach and captain were not in agreement due to a disastrous Ashes series, where hosts Australia defeated England 4–1.

Stokes criticized Brendon McCullum publicly during the Ashes tour, saying, “I think we are playing against teams now who have a response to the style of cricket that we have been playing for a long time.”
Stokes’ support of coach improves relationship
Later, the captain also assured that the coach will not lose his job because of the Ashes result, as his performance and preparations were also lacking.
Ben Stokes told the media in support of the coach, “I expect him to be (coach), but it’s not my decision. I love working with ‘Baz’. He’s a great guy, and he’s a very, very, very good coach. There’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes that he would never let out, so he has my full support. He’s a very, very good coach.”
ECB completes its review: report
According to Hindustan Times report, final talks took place between McCullum and Stokes this week, and the ECB has also completed its review. The former New Zealand player also acknowledged the changes made by the ECB bosses. Performance director Ed Barney will take on a more prominent role and oversee the selection of the new coaching staff.
In the T20 World Cup 2026, England were eliminated from the title race after losing to India in the semi-finals in a high-scoring and close match. After the tournament, many former cricketers went against McCullum and also asked the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to appoint a new coach.
A few days ago there was speculation that former England batsman Kevin Pietersen could be the successor of the team. According to recent reports, McCullum has saved his job for the time being.
