Punjab Kings (PBKS) fans can take a sigh of relief – Lockie Ferguson’s absence in the early going ipl 2026 There will be no disciplinary action. The New Zealand fast bowler, who will miss the first seven matches of the season, has taken leave due to personal reasons and both the franchise and the BCCI are reportedly supporting his decision.
Strict rule to miss the entire IPL season
Firstly, there was confusion due to the strict IPL rules introduced ahead of the 2025 mega auction. Under that rule, any foreign player who withdraws after being selected can face a two-season ban. Exactly the same happened with England’s Harry Brook when he withdrew his name from IPL 2025.
However, the situation in Ferguson is very different. He has not opted out of the tournament entirely β he has simply taken a planned break and will rejoin the team later in the season. As a result, his absence is officially classified as “planned leave”, not a breach of contract.
“He is not available for the first seven matches,” An IPL source told PTI. “Ferguson’s move is classified as a planned leave for personal reasons rather than a breach of contract or unauthorized absence, and thus no sanctions are expected.” He added.
This clarity is a big relief for Punjab Kings, who finished runners-up last season and are looking to build momentum heading into IPL 2026. Importantly, the franchise has taken a humanistic approach β recognizing that some moments in life are bigger than cricket.

Ferguson puts family first as Punjab Kings look for strong start
The reason behind Ferguson’s decision is both simple and heartbreaking. The 34-year-old recently became a father for the first time and he wants to spend time with his newborn son and support his partner during this important phase.
Speaking about his choice, Ferguson clarified that family comes first.
“I’ve just had a little son; I’m trying to spend as much time at home as possible and help my wife. After that I’ll have a few weeks off before heading into the latter stages of the IPL and going away for the winter.”
He also talked about the challenge of finding the right balance between professional commitments and personal life.
“Sometimes the hard part is deciding when to rest. This felt like the right time, especially since my wife was taking care of the baby while I was at the World Cup.” he told Cricbuzz.
While he will miss the first part of the tournament, Ferguson has shown encouraging form in the IPL. In the recent T20I against South Africa, he delivered an impressive spell, taking 1/9 in four overs along with a three-wicket performance in the previous match. These performances suggest he will return sharp and ready for the crucial latter stages of the league.
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings, owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, are not short of options. The franchise has a strong pace attack with players like Marco Jansen, Arshdeep Singh, Azmatullah Umarzai, Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis. Jensen in particular has been in excellent form and is expected to play a key role in Ferguson’s absence.
Who will PBKS start its IPL 2026 campaign against? Chennai Super Kings (CSK) In Guwahati on 30 March. Although they will have to make do without Ferguson initially, the team is confident about its depth and balance.
