The team will open its season against Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 29, followed by crucial fixtures against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) – Pathirana is likely to miss all the matches.

“The latest update we know is that he is apparently with the Sri Lankan Cricket Board and they have rehabbed him. And the latest communication we have received is hopefully mid-April when they feel he will be match fit. That’s what we know so far.” Nair said.
Pathirana’s absence is due to an injury he sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026, which forced him out of the tournament midway. Since then he is undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Interestingly, Sri Lanka Cricket has already cleared him to participate in the IPL, with secretary Bandula Dissanayake saying that the fast bowler has completed his rehabilitation. However, KKR are keen to take a cautious approach, ensuring that he is fully match-ready before bringing him back into the playing eleven.
Bowling concerns deepen as KKR looks for solutions
While Pathirana’s late return is a matter of concern, KKR’s bowling concerns do not end there. The team will also miss young Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana, who has been a key part of their team in recent seasons. Rana suffered a knee injury during the T20 World Cup practice match and is likely to miss most, if not all, of the IPL 2026 matches.

Nair admitted what a big blow this is for the team.
“First of all, it is a big blow, because Harshit has been an integral part of this team for the last few seasons, including the Championship season. He has evolved a lot as a cricketer over the years, so it is not easy to replace him.” He accepted.
With two important fast bowlers unavailable, KKR is now actively looking for their replacements. The team management, along with the leadership group, is assessing the domestic bowlers who can step up and fill the gaps.
“In the last few days, we have looked at a few bowlers. We are trying to evaluate with the help of the leadership group who fits in and who can play that role to the best of their ability. We are still evaluating it and have not taken a decision yet,” Nair added.
Meanwhile, KKR have already made an adjustment by bringing in the Zimbabwean fast bowler blessings to muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman. Although this adds some depth, the absence of proven actors like Pathirana and Rana will still be felt.
As the three-time champions prepare to start their season, the focus will be on managing this transition period effectively. If they can remain competitive in the early games, Pathirana’s expected return in mid-April could provide the spark they need to build momentum.
However, for now, KKR will have to rely on their existing resources and hope that their revamped bowling attack can rise to the occasion.
