Delhi Capitals (DC) Looks like there’s finally clarity when it comes to KL Rahul’s role going forward ipl 2026 β and it could be the reset needed for both the player and the franchise.
KL Rahul is ready for a new role in IPL 2026
After a season full of experimentation and changing responsibilities, the think tank has reportedly decided to go back to basics: Rahul will open the innings and handle wicketkeeping duties.
It’s a move that seems both logical and overdue. Rahul has enjoyed his most successful IPL season as an opening batsman, where he has consistently scored runs with both pace and consistency. By giving him a definite role at the top, DC aims to bring much-needed stability to a batting order that looked shaky at times last year.
Rahul’s role in IPL 2025 was anything but certain. Having been signed for a huge sum of βΉ14 crore, he was often pushed into the middle order and batted at number 4 in many matches. Although he still managed to emerge as DC’s highest run-scorer β with 539 runs in 13 matches at an average of close to 54 and a strike rate of 149.72 β the frequent changes did not allow him to get into rhythm.
The turning point came late in the season. With the team struggling to find reliable opening batsmen, Rahul was moved back to the top β and the impact was immediate. His unbeaten 112 off 65 balls against Gujarat Titans is a reminder of what he can do when given clarity and responsibility, even if the team could not cross the line that day.
Now, with IPL 2026 around the corner, Delhi Capitals look determined not to repeat the same mistake. As well as opening the batting, Rahul is also expected to keep wickets – a role he already handles for India in ODIs. This dual responsibility could make him even more central to the team’s plans, both tactically and as a senior figure in the lineup.
DC eyes big goals in IPL 2026
The decision to restrict Rahul’s role also comes in the backdrop of growing discussion over how he was used last season. Former Indian cricketers have openly stated that the uncertainty regarding their batting position is holding both them and the team back.
Subramaniam Badrinath There was no mincing words while addressing the issue. “Every year, the batting order is their puzzle, especially where KL Rahul should bat. I believe KL Rahul wants to open the innings. But, on the other hand, the team management wants him to bat in the middle order.” Badrinath said on his YouTube channel. “It seems to be a constant struggle. They will definitely have to resolve the issue. It is not clear whether KL Rahul is happy in DC or not.”
His comments reflect a broader sentiment β ββthat clarity in roles is essential, especially for a player of Rahul’s calibre. Constant adjustments can disrupt the rhythm, and in a fast-paced format like T20 cricket, it can make a huge difference.

Expressing similar views, Mohammad Kaif strongly supported Rahul to continue with the opening duties. “I think he will open and he should open. His record as an opener is excellent. If we talk about the last three or four years, his graph in terms of strike rate has gone up a lot. I think he should not get confused.” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
With Rahul now set at the top, Delhi’s batting lineup suddenly looks more balanced. There is enough firepower in the middle order with players like David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Nitish Rana, giving Rahul the freedom to anchor or accelerate depending on the situation.
Beyond the franchise, this season could also be important for Rahul personally. With India out of the T20I setup since the 2022 T20 World Cup, IPL 2026 presents a golden opportunity to make a strong case for a comeback. Consistent performances as an opening batsman β where he is most comfortable β could bring him firmly back into the national team.
Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 1 and all eyes will be on how this newfound clarity plays out on the field.
