Cricket Australia is preparing to give a big blow to the legendary all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. As the Australian cricket team board prepares to announce the annual central contract list for the 2026-27 season in the coming weeks, major changes are expected.

This year, the focus is largely shifting towards Test cricket, and that could force many white-ball players out of the system. And now Glenn Maxwell is in danger of losing his central contract.

Glenn Maxwell’s Cricket Australia contract set to end

According to a report by Code Sports, Cricket Australia is set to remove Maxwell from its central contract list for the new season. The move has already generated huge buzz as the all-rounder has been one of the biggest white-ball stars for the Australia national cricket team in recent years.

Cricket Australia will soon announce the new contract list and only a few white ball specialists will get the contracts. Australia will play less white-ball cricket in 2026, so the board is focusing more on Test players. Due to this, many T20I and ODI stars may miss out on annual contracts.

Under the current Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA), CA can give out 20 to 24 central contracts, but this year they are reportedly planning to cut down the list.

Australia’s main stars still safe, but white-ball players facing trouble

Maxwell is not alone, but young stars like Sam Konstas and Matt Short are also expected to be left out of the central contract list. Now, all eyes are on the players who will have to prove themselves in the next 12 months and they are Lance Morris, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Jhye Richardson and Matthew Kuhnman. Their future depends on domestic performance.

On the safe side, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis and Nathan Ellis are almost certain to remain under Cricket Australia contracts. But the real backbone of Australia remains unchanged. Big match winners like Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh are still the key players of the team.

Big trouble for Cameron Green, Sheffield Shield comeback ends in new controversy

Meanwhile, Cameron Green has been in the news for the wrong reasons after his return to domestic cricket. After a tough Australian summer, the 26-year-old all-rounder returned to the Sheffield Shield following Australia’s 4-1 Ashes series win over England on home soil.

Green finally regained some rhythm for Western Australia. He scored a century in the first innings and later played a key role in helping his team draw against New South Wales on the final day on Tuesday. But the real drama happened after the third day’s play.

The tall cricketer was earlier expected to speak to the media in a general press interaction. Surprisingly, Green agreed to talk to only one journalist instead of facing the entire media contingent and even that conversation came with an express condition that the conversation would be limited to the current Shield match.

The first question was simple and focused on his return to racing. But the next article looked at his poor form during the recent summer. Green didn’t like this and ended the conversation in about 20 seconds. The Australian all-rounder reportedly walked away disappointed.
