The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is now fearing a possible ban as the government has launched an investigation to find out if any illegality was done during the cricket board’s elections. According to International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, government interference can lead to any national cricket board being banned from international cricket.
According to the latest report by ESPN Cricinfo, the BCB has warned the Bangladesh government against interfering in board affairs, following the formation of an inquiry committee by the Sports Ministry to investigate allegations of misconduct during last year’s BCB elections.
Bangladesh government formed a special committee to investigate BCB elections
BCB has issued a long statement regarding the current incident related to last year’s elections. Allegations of corrupt elections started a few days before the elections. Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal alleged that Aminul had interfered in the election process. In protest against this, Iqbal also withdrew his nomination. Aminul Islam Bulbul was re-elected as the head of the cricket board through elections in October 2025.
In a significant move, the Sports Ministry constituted a five-member body to probe the nature of the elections. According to media reports, the Ministry had given 15 working days from March 11 to the specially constituted investigation team for investigation.
BCB headed by Aminul Islam is under criticism
As the Sports Ministry formed a team to oversee election matters, the Aminul Islam-led cricket board came under immense pressure. The cricket board feared that this move by the government might attract global attention.
“In this context, the matter has been referred to informally in discussions with senior representatives of the ICC leadership. It was indicated that incidents which could be interpreted as interference in the affairs of a democratically elected cricket board could raise governance concerns within the international cricket framework,” the BCB said in its official statement.
Why can ICC impose ban on National Cricket Board?
The International Cricket Council (ICC) mandates that all member boards operate autonomously, free from interference by government or public bodies in their administration, management and selection decisions. Under Article 2.4D of the ICC Constitution, political interference can result in serious penalties, including suspension from international cricket, freezing of funding and loss of voting rights.
In the past, the cricket boards of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka have been suspended from international cricket for political or government interference.
The BCB further said in its statement, “Given the potential implications for Bangladesh cricket at the international level, the BCB considers it important to address this matter with appropriate care and transparency. Before initiating any formal communication or proceedings with the ICC, the BCB believes it is appropriate to engage directly with the National Sports Council to seek clarification regarding the context, intent and potential implications of the Gazette.”
““The BCB has requested the National Sports Council to close this matter in a manner that protects the stability, independence and continued progress of Bangladesh cricket, while also ensuring that the country’s standing within the international cricket community remains fully protected.”
