Virat Kohli is widely known as the “Chase Master” for his incredible ability to lead India to victory. Over the years, Virat Kohli has built a reputation for finishing matches under pressure and performing well when the Indian national cricket team needs him most.
But at the same time, some of Kohli’s innings have also sparked debate among fans and experts on chasing individual milestones. He has questioned whether the former India captain sometimes slows down as he approaches big personal milestones.
Virat Kohli’s record breaking figures while chasing the target
Many debates broke out on social media regarding this, although the team often wins that match. The record of this powerful right-handed batsman while chasing the target in One Day International (ODI) cricket is very excellent.

He holds the record for scoring most centuries while chasing runs in ODI cricket, in which he has scored 28 centuries while batting at number two. He has also scored over 6000 runs in ODI cricket in successful chases, which shows how important he has been for India in pressure situations.
Some innings raise eyebrows
One of the most talked-about moments came during the 2023 ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh. Chasing the target of 257, Virat Kohli was close to another century and gave away a single, which led to criticism from some fans and some experts. Ultimately Kohli finished the match with a six and also completed his century.
Another moment came against South Africa in the same tournament. On his birthday, Kohli scored his 49th ODI century and equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record. During his innings, many felt that his score slowed down to between 90 and 100 on the difficult pitch.
Similar discussions took place during IPL also. Some critics have pointed to the slow “anchor” innings, saying that he sometimes focuses too much on making individual numbers. However, many believe that these innings usually come when wickets are falling quickly or when the pitch is difficult to bat on.
Mohammad Aamir criticizes Gautam Gambhir for accusing Virat Kohli of chasing personal achievements
Amidst this debate, former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Aamir strongly supported Kohli. He highlighted that Kohli has always played with the aim of winning matches for India and most of his centuries have come in games where India emerged victorious. Notably, Gautam Gambhir recently made some comments regarding personal achievements which many believed were aimed at the legendary batsman Virat Kohli.

Mohammad Amir said on his YouTube channel, “Kohli never played for individual achievements. If he wanted, he could have scored many more centuries. There is not a single match where Kohli has scored a century and India has not won; he always plays for the team, not for individual records.”
