Former World Cup-winning Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has criticized former Indian spinner Kirti Azad for politicizing cricket by accusing Suryakumar Yadav and Jay Shah of religious bias.

No Indian fan is happy after India won the T20 World Cup on home soil. However, controversies keep finding their way into every situation, and this time too, a former cricketer and current politician has complicated the situation when Suryakumar Yadav, along with coach Gautam Gambhir and Jay Shah, took the trophy to the nearby Hanuman temple to seek blessings, hinting at religious prejudice.

The comments came from TMC MP Kirti Azad, whose party has been ruling Bengal for more than a decade and is at loggerheads with the BJP government. There has been frequent conflict between the two parties over the use of religious beliefs as propaganda.

What did the 1983 World Cup winner say that angered Indian fans?

Kirti Azad was a part of the Indian team when they won the ICC Trophy for the first time in 1983. The former World Cup winner had raised questions on captain Suryakumar Yadav and Jay Shah for taking the trophy to a ‘Hindu’ temple and not to the respective religious places of other religions like a mosque or a church.

He made some sharp allegations and claimed that this victory belongs to 1.4 billion Indians, which includes not just Hindus but people of every religion and also highlighted that many players from other religions like Mohammed Siraj and player of the tournament Sanju Samson contributed heavily to India’s success.

He also recalled the 1983 World Cup when India’s team had Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian players and brought the trophy back to India, which he called theirs, “…Motherland India India Hindustan.”

Harbhajan Singh hits out at Kirti Azad for unnecessarily politicizing cricket

Although the opinions on this issue will also divide Indian fans into two parties, it still seems to blow a small issue out of proportion. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, who is also a former World Cup winner for India, also commented on this.

Talking about the senior spinner, Harbhajan said it is absurd that despite being a former cricketer, he is politicizing the simple act of players taking the trophy to the temple.

Bhajji said, “It is absurd that someone is politicizing the players taking the trophy to the temple… Kirti himself is a former cricketer, so I did not expect him to say such a thing… Perhaps he is giving more priority to politics and has forgotten that he is a player.”

Harbhajan Singh has taken a dig at BCCI after the announcement of prize money for Team India.

Harbhajan Singh was happy with India winning the ICC tournament and expressed his desire for the management to show more praise to the cricketers who he felt deserved much more.

After winning the ICC Trophy for the second consecutive time, BCCI had announced to give prize money of Rs 131 crore to the Indian cricket team. However, Harbhajan believes that the award could have been increased a bit given the hard work put in by the team last year.

Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh said, “I was expecting more, because when such a big job is done, the reward should be even bigger. But congratulations to the team for their dominance in the World Cup and for showing everyone how powerful India is.”
