Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has made a big revelation about his vision for the national cricket team. After recently guiding the national team to T20 World Cup 2026 victory, Gambhir said that winning an Olympic medal holds more value and importance than lifting the World Cup trophy.
India won their third T20 World Cup title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. The Men in Blue have been an absolutely unstoppable force in the white-ball format. Notably, the Indian team will be hoping to secure a medal in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
My entire focus is on that – Gautam Gambhir reveals his vision
During a special conversation with Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir shared his views regarding his coaching tenure. When asked about his thoughts on leading the Indian cricket team to an Olympic medal in 2028, the head coach said that his current focus is on the upcoming bilateral series.
Gambhir said, “Even during my playing days, I never thought so far ahead. It’s still very far away. For me, every series matters. As long as I can perform well, I will continue. The next series is against Afghanistan, followed by the tour of Sri Lanka. My entire focus is on that.”
“To be honest, I haven’t even thought about the ODI World Cup yet – that’s still a year and a half away. The Olympics come after that. If there is someone better than me who can lead the Indian team to victory, he should take up coaching. If I am best suited, I should do that,” he said.
The whole world participates in the Olympics- Gautam Gambhir
During the same conversation, Gautam Gambhir said that winning a gold medal in a multi-sport event brings more respect than winning a limited-team cricket tournament.
Gambhir said, “You are right. I believe an Olympic medal is as important as the T20 World Cup – maybe even more. I think the T20 World Cup has 20 teams, whereas the whole world takes part in the Olympics. Winning there brings as much respect, if not more, than winning the World Cup.”
Team India has mixed results in all formats under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir.
Under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, the Indian men’s team has broken many records in limited overs cricket. They became the first host nation to defend the T20 World Cup crown. Sanju Samson and Jasprit Bumrah played important match-winning roles in the Ahmedabad final.
It is noteworthy that Men in Blue also won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup last year. However, despite their huge success in white ball, India’s recent decline in red ball cricket remains a major concern for the management.
Under Gambhir’s coaching tenure, the team suffered tough defeats against New Zealand and South Africa, lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), and failed to secure a berth in the World Test Championship final.
