The next 50-over World Cup will be in South Africa, where the ball can cause trouble for the batsmen, unlike the conditions in the subcontinent, where the batsmen enjoy scoring runs. As per the latest update, the 14th edition of the tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November 2027.

Gautam Gambhir claimed that the venue of the tournament can play an important role in strategic decisions. He also reflected on the fact that in recent times, India has not played too many One Day Internationals – around 24 ODIs between the IPL and the ODI World Cup 2027.

Gautam Gambhir believes that ODI World Cup will be very challenging for Team India

For now, there will be a two-month break from international duties due to the Indian Premier League. Gautam Gambhir will keep an eye on the tournament. Decisions for ODI World Cup 2026 can be taken after the inclusion of IPL 2026.

“There will be plenty of time; IPL 2027 will happen in the coming few months. By the end of the Indian Premier League 2027, the hope is to have a blueprint for the upcoming fixtures. The ODI World Cup will be in South Africa, which could be very difficult.”

“We will have to see which players are capable of playing well in those conditions. We may also have to try many combinations. The final decision regarding the team for the tournament will come through discussions between the selectors and the coaches,” Gautam Gambhir said in an interview.

Team India has to play a total of 24 ODI matches from October 2025 to December 2026. As per the calendar, they had already faced Australia, South Africa and New Zealand for a 3-match ODI series.

After the conclusion of IPL 2026, the team will first face Afghanistan in a home ODI series in June, followed by an away series against England in July. Before the conclusion of 2026, the Men in Blue will also face West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Apart from the England tour, the remaining ODI matches will be held on Indian soil.
