According to the latest news reports, Brendon McCullum will continue to be the head coach of the England cricket team across all formats. The former New Zealand captain faced massive scrutiny over his position following a disastrous Ashes campaign in Australia and several off-field controversies.

England lost to hosts India by seven runs in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026 in Mumbai. After winning the toss and batting first, the team captained by Harry Brook gave 253 runs to India. However, the English team remained in the game till the last over but missed out by seven runs in a high-pressure encounter.

Brendon McCullum is expected to remain England’s head coach across all formats.

According to a report in The Guardian, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is all set to support Brendon McCullum and retain his leadership. The ECB is currently conducting a formal review into what went wrong during the Ashes tour.

McCullum was under a lot of pressure after England’s 4-1 defeat in Australia. That tour was marred by off-field controversies and player indiscipline. Despite this horror show, the head coach managed to convince the ECB that he is the right person for the job.

After the Ashes, McCullum led a major cultural change in the dressing room, admitting that the team was too comfortable in Australia. The players started practicing late in the evening and a strict midnight curfew was imposed ahead of their tour of Sri Lanka.

England’s key staff set to stay until the 2027 World Cup

Brendon McCullum is currently under contract with the ECB until the 2027 50-over World Cup in South Africa. Managing director of men’s cricket, Rob Key, is also expected to remain in his role. Key had appointed McCullum as Test coach four years ago.

Test captain Ben Stokes has signed a central contract until the end of 2027. White-ball captain Harry Brook has also been backed to continue, even though he was recently fined £30,000 by the ECB for an altercation with a bouncer in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, there have been some changes to the backroom staff, with Carl Hopkinson appointed as fielding coach and Luke Wright set to leave his role as national selector at the end of the month.

Brendon McCullum ready to focus on rebuilding England’s Test team

With his position looking secure, plans are already underway for Brendon McCullum to focus on rebuilding the Test team. The big long-term goal for the team is the upcoming home Ashes series in 2027.

In particular, ECB officials believe supporting the current leadership team is England’s best chance of regaining the vase from Australia. The Board clearly views this continuity as essential for stability and future success in major tournaments.

While McCullum publicly defended his coaching methods right after the dreadful Ashes defeat, he has taken a different approach behind closed doors. During private discussions with the ECB, he showed a willingness to adapt and evolve its strategies going forward.
