Team India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, returned to Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium to prepare for the semi-final match against England in the T20 World Cup 2026. However, the focus has shifted to the condition of the pitch after head coach Gautam Gambhir’s involvement during a training session.
India will once again face England in the T20 World Cup semi-finals, making it the third consecutive edition in which both the teams will face each other for a place in the final. This match will be held on Thursday 5 March at Wankhede Stadium.
India will go into the match with confidence after the excellent performance of its batting lineup in the recent match against West Indies. England, on the other hand, will enter the semi-finals undefeated at the Super 8 stage. However, they will have to adapt their strategies from playing in Sri Lanka to the conditions in India.

Gautam Gambhir inspects green Wankhede pitch before semi-final
Gautam Gambhir was seen having an intense discussion with the curator during India’s late night training session on Tuesday. Gambhir inspected the strip closely before the ground staff covered it. However, no Indian player came to inspect the pitch during the session.
Two days before the match, the wicket looked greener than usually seen at Wankhede. The amount of grass on it seemed unusual even by first-class standards, let alone for a T20 International.
The heavy grass cover may have been kept intentionally. Temperatures are constantly rising, and leaving more grass on the pitch helps prevent it from drying out or cracking. The key decision now will be how much grass the curators remove before the start of play.
Why is Gautam Gambhir so angry at the pitch curator..??
– This is an ICC event, how can he interfere so much in it?

Is Gautam Gambhir unhappy with Wankhede pitch?
Reports on social media have claimed that Gautam Gambhir was unhappy with the condition of the Wankhede Stadium pitch ahead of the India vs England second semi-final. The rumors went viral and discussions began about the surface being ready for the match.
However, Times of India journalist Gautam Gupta clarified that the reports were “fake news”, confirming that speculations about Gambhir being upset with the condition of the pitch were not true.

The Wankhede pitch was used in the first two group-stage matches
The pitch prepared for Thursday’s semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium has already been used in the tournament. It hosted England’s group-stage match against the West Indies on 11 February and the match between Nepal and Italy the following day.
West Indies successfully defended 196 runs and won the evening game by 30 runs. Adil Rashid took 2 for 16 in his four overs, while West Indies relied heavily on their spinners. Gudakesh Moti took three wickets and Roston Chase also took two wickets.
The same strip was also used for the one-day game between Nepal and Italy. Italy performed brilliantly with an impressive 10-wicket win to register their first win in the T20 World Cup. However, conditions may not be exactly the same right now.
