India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, will take on West Indies in a high-stakes “virtual quarterfinal” of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, March 1. The winner of this blockbuster match will join South Africa, England and New Zealand in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Both teams currently have two points each in the Super 8 stage. India won by 72 runs over Zimbabwe while West Indies are looking to bounce back after a heavy defeat to the Proteas. South Africa have already qualified from Group 1 and the winner of the match will face England in the semi-finals next week.
Weather update ahead of India vs West Indies T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 game
The match in Kolkata is expected to be played without any weather interruption as there is zero percent chance of rain as per the forecasts. Fans can expect a perfect encounter, the outcome of which will depend entirely on the performance of the teams rather than the weather.
During the game, the temperature is expected to be around 27 degrees Celsius at the time of the toss and drop to around 24 degrees Celsius afterwards. The sky is expected to be clear with very little cloud cover, providing ideal conditions for cricket.
Humidity is expected to be close to 70 percent during the second innings. Dew can come into play, making the ball slippery and making it difficult for bowlers to hold the ball while defending the target.
What will happen if India vs West Indies match is cancelled?
Although there is very little chance of rain, missing it would be a disaster for the men in blue. If the match is abandoned, both teams will share one point each. In that case, West Indies will qualify for the semi-finals as they have a better net run rate than India.
If India wins, it will face England in the semi-finals. However, a loss or washout would mean the defending champion would return home early.
The Men in Blue are placed third in the Super 8 Group 1 table with two points and a net run rate of -0.100. Meanwhile, the Men in Maroon are at the second position with a net run rate of +1.791.
India wants to maintain the best record in Kolkata
India will arrive at Eden Gardens with a perfect 4-0 T20I record against West Indies at this venue. However, they have lost three out of four matches against the Caribbean team in World Cup history. India’s only win in that period came in 2014.
The pitch at Eden Gardens is expected to be good for batting. Previous matches in this tournament have seen scores above 200, and coaches from both sides expect another high-scoring contest.
The surface looks dry, a hint of green which may help the fast bowlers at the start. India’s main concern remains the form of their sixth bowling option, as Shivam Dubey has struggled in recent matches.
