The 38-year-old player has started his training with the Mumbai Indians staff ahead of the new season. The upcoming Indian Premier League is expected to start in the last week of March. Therefore, the batsman will get plenty of time to prepare for the campaign.
Sharma last appeared in a competitive match during the 3-match ODI series between India and New Zealand. Since the opening batsman has retired from T20Is and Tests, he can spend his free time. Instead of lazy moments, the veteran cricketer chose to work on fitness.

Rohit Sharma has started working on his fitness after retiring from Test cricket. Along with his close friend Abhishek Nair, the Mumbaikar lost a significant amount of weight with the aim of prolonging his professional cricket career. During his international tenure as captain, the batsman was often criticized by cricket fans for his fitness.
Rohit Sharma can play the upcoming ODI World Cup
It is widely believed that the ‘Hitman’ has a desire to play the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, which he did not win as the captain of Team India. Ahead of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, when India faced New Zealand for the ODI series followed by a 5-match contest, Rohit looked lean and very fit. According to reports, he is following a strict diet to stay mentally and physically fit and active.
A few days ago, it was reported that Rohit Sharma had communicated with the Mumbai Indians franchise with the message of using him as a full-time player in IPL 2026. In the last season (IPL 2025), the franchise under the leadership of Hardik Pandya used Sharma as an impact player.
‘Hitman’ played some sensational innings for India in recent times
It is believed that ahead of IPL 2026, Sharma had requested the team management to allow him to take the field so that he can contribute as a regular player.
Since retiring from Tests and T20Is, Rohit has played some brilliant innings for Team India in the One Day International format. Last year, against Australia, the right-handed batsman scored an unbeaten 121 runs after scoring a half-century in the previous game.
Against South Africa, he added some fifty-plus innings to his track record. For Mumbai, during a limited overs home match, Sharma scored 155 against Sikkim. Mumbai Indians fans will hope to see the fiery form of the ‘Hitman’ again in the IPL season.
