The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly losing patience with Gautam Gambhir, whose position as India head coach is now under serious threat. Gambhir was brought in to make the team stronger and more attacking, but recent results have gone in the opposite direction.
India suffered a massive 76-run defeat against South Africa in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, a defeat that badly damaged both confidence and qualification hopes. There is growing dissatisfaction with Gautam Gambhir’s way of handling players, questionable tactical decisions and poor Test record.
The ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is being seen as their last opportunity. If India fails to reach the semi-finals then BCCI can break ties with it. With India’s net run rate falling to -3.800, there is a strong possibility of an early exit without reaching the semi-finals.
Journey from IPL success to India’s head coach
Gautam Gambhir became one of the most successful coaches of IPL. The former opening batsman worked as a mentor with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He helped Lucknow Super Giants reach the playoffs in two consecutive seasons and later led the Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title.
Gambhir took bold decisions during KKR’s title-winning campaign. He induced Sunil Narine to open the batting again, which did a good job and supported the youngsters who went on to become match-winners.
Following his success, the BCCI appointed Gambhir as the head coach of India after Rahul Dravid stepped down. The board wanted a tough and fearless leader who could help India win ICC trophies.
Fans welcomed Gambhir’s arrival and liked his straightforward style. However, it soon became clear that coaching an IPL team for a short season is very different from managing the national team for an entire year.

Gautam Gambhir’s record in white ball cricket as head coach
Gautam Gambhir’s record in white-ball cricket is not the main reason for his criticism. Before the heavy defeat to South Africa in Ahmedabad during the T20 World Cup 2026, India were doing well in T20 cricket and went for almost a year without losing a T20 series.
India has also given mixed results in ODIs. They lost the recent ODI series 1-2 against New Zealand at home last month. Gambhir worked on building a team that did not rely solely on a few big names but focused on players who could change the game quickly.
Despite the positive results, questions remain over the overall impact of Gambhir’s plan. Many believe that India won many matches in the T20 World Cup due to individual talent rather than clear tactical decisions.
Gautam Gambhir won 2 big trophies
Gautam Gambhir has won two major trophies during his career. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India won the Champions Trophy 2025, which was played in Pakistan and UAE. The Men in Blue won the ICC title in the 50-over event after 12 years. India won the global title in his first ICC tournament as head coach.
Gautam Gambhir got support from the fans and the board after that win. A few months later, the former opener led the national team to victory in the Asia Cup 2025 under Suryakumar Yadav. These two tournament wins helped build his image as a coach who could handle pressure games.
However, past success has not protected him from criticism. Poor results in Test cricket have already damaged his reputation. It is noteworthy that the performance of the team led by Suryakumar Yadav in the T20 World Cup 2026 can decide his future as the head coach.
India is struggling in test cricket under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir’s biggest problem as a head coach has come in Test cricket and BCCI is unhappy with him. Under his leadership, India’s long-standing dominance at home was broken and an era when visiting teams rarely won Test series in the country ended.
New Zealand defeated India 3-0 at home in late 2024. This was the first time that India was whitewashed in a home Test series. The Men in Blue lost the Test series 3β1 in Australia and failed to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time.
The situation worsened the following year when South Africa toured India and won the series 2β0, including a crushing 408-run win in Guwahati in November 2025.
Before losing the series to the Proteas, the Shubman Gill-led side drew a five-match series in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and whitewashed the West Indies in a two-match home Test series.
Tension between Gautam Gambhir and senior players

Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as head coach has also seen tension inside the dressing room. He wants complete control and does not like senior players getting special treatment. According to reports, his strict rules have upset many experienced players.
After India’s poor Test series defeat in Australia, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returned to domestic cricket to remain in the race for Test places. However, the experienced pair shocked the cricket community by announcing their retirement from Test cricket just before the England tour.
The official reason was that he wanted to move on, but people close to the team said that the atmosphere in the dressing room had become toxic.
Former India player Manoj Tiwari even claimed that Gambhir forced both Rohit and Virat to retire. The team environment seems to be very strict and the players are afraid of making mistakes, which has raised serious concerns about morale under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir.

Gautam Gambhir’s strategic decisions that shocked cricket
Gautam Gambhir took many strategic decisions which surprised and disappointed many people. He dropped one of India’s most consistent performers, vice-captain Axar Patel, for the first Super 8 match against South Africa in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 22.
Gambhir favored Washington Sundar, believing that an off-spinner would be effective against South Africa’s left-handed batsmen. The move backfired badly, as Sundar bowled only two overs, conceded 17 runs and took no wickets. He failed to contribute with the bat also.
The decision was criticized by former India captain Kris Srikkanth, who described the defeat as shameful and questioned why the vice-captain was left out. Gambhir has also reshuffled the batting order, promoting lower order batsmen for no apparent reason and continuing to ignore Kuldeep Yadav.
First big test β T20 World Cup 2026
T20 World Cup 2026 has become the biggest test for Gautam Gambhir so far. India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, entered the tournament as defending champions after winning the title in 2024 and fans were hopeful that the team would repeat that success.
The Men in Blue remained undefeated in the group stage. They defeated arch-rivals Pakistan and smaller teams like United States, Netherlands and Namibia without any trouble. However, his performance was not satisfactory.
The real challenge started in the Super 8 stage when India came up against a strong team like South Africa. The aggressive batting approach appeared careless, with the batsmen losing their wickets by playing risky shots.
Notably, the bowling unit had no clear backup plan. Indian bowlers took three wickets for 20 runs but failed to maintain the pressure. While chasing the target of 188 runs, they were out for just 111 runs. The heavy defeat raised new questions on Gambhir’s methods.
India on the verge of being out of T20 World Cup 2026
| India – T20 World Cup 2026 Match Result | ||||||

| 43rd match | super eight | South Africa | Ahmedabad | 111 | 187/7 | South Africa won by 76 runs |
India are second in Group 1 with a net run rate of -3.800, giving them very little margin for error. After their 76-run defeat to South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India missed out on crucial points and their net run rate took a huge hit.
To stay in the competition without relying on net run rate, India will have to beat Zimbabwe and West Indies in their remaining Super 8 matches in Chennai and Kolkata. They will also need South Africa to win both their remaining matches.
In that case, South Africa will finish with six points and India with four points, taking both the teams to the semi-finals. If India wins both matches but South Africa beats Zimbabwe and loses to West Indies, India, South Africa and West Indies will all finish on four points.
West Indies top Group 1 with two points and a net run rate of +5.350. South Africa are in second place with two points and a net run rate of +3.800. It would be a big blow for the defending champions to be out of the Super 8 stage.
What’s next for Gautam Gambhir?
Gautam Gambhir’s future may change rapidly in the coming days. Gambhir’s tenure will end early if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decides to sack him after their exit from the T20 World Cup. He had signed a contract with BCCI till ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
According to the report of Dainik Jagran, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have made a big offer to Gambhir for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The franchise wants him to play three roles including CEO, mentor and partner with a stake in the team.
Gambhir cannot accept the offer at the moment as BCCI rules do not allow India head coaches to work with any IPL franchise. However, if he loses his job after the World Cup, that ban will not apply, and he can step straight into the role with Rajasthan Royals.
The next few days are important for Indian cricket and Gambhir’s career. He is struggling to save his position and needs results, luck and strong performances from his players. If India fails again, his tenure as head coach is expected to end soon.
