Arrogance, overconfidence – these are some of the words used by the great Sunil Gavaskar to describe Team India after their 76-run defeat against South Africa last night.

Sunil Gavaskar believes that India should learn from South Africa to improve its game. Gavaskar was impressed by the way the Proteas changed their approach during the match.

Sunil Gavaskar advised Team India to learn from South Africa

Like many cricket experts and Indian cricket fans, Sunil Gavaskar is also disappointed to see Team India in such a weak position. The former India opener suggested the Suryakumar Yadav-led team to learn something from South Africa. Gavaskar became angry with the way Indian batsmen lost their wickets.

“India didn’t pay attention to South Africa’s innings. They came and threw their bats at every ball, hoping for a boundary. You don’t play T20 cricket like this,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Geostar, as quoted by PTI.

He further said, “You have to learn from the opposition team. If they have scored well on such a difficult surface, you have to get rid of your ego, observe and adjust.”

Gavaskar particularly praised Dewald Brewis and David Miller for their batting efforts

The partnership between Dewald Brewis and David Miller was one of the highlights of the match. Tristan Stubbs also added a lot of runs, although the pitch was not easy for the batsmen.

India needed a partnership like Brewis and Miller. But the Men in Blue were not able to do so. Instead of showing some patience on the field, they played their usual aggressive game and failed miserably.

“After seeing how Brewis and Miller built their partnership, that was the approach the Indian batsmen needed,” the Indian cricket legend said on JioStar.

Indian cricket legend described the batsman of Team India led by Suryakumar Yadav as overconfident.

The former cricketer criticized the Indian batsmen and described them as overconfident. Sunil Gavaskar clearly said that South Africa deserved to be the winner last night in Ahmedabad.

“The Indian batsmen didn’t do that. They came in with overconfidence, threw their bats at everything and lost wickets. South Africa clearly outplayed India and it was a good win for them,” he said.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, South Africa scored 187 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs with the help of Dewald Brewis’ 45, David Miller’s 63 and Tristan Stubbs’ unbeaten 44 runs. In reply, India could score only 111 runs for all ten wickets. Apart from Shivam Dubey, who scored 42 runs, no other Indian batsman performed as per his reputation in the crucial match of the Super 8 round.

After the South Africa match is over, Team India has to play two more matches in the Super 8 stage, which will be against Zimbabwe and West Indies. The Indian national team currently has no option but to win both the remaining matches to keep the semi-final hopes alive for the 2026 T20 World Cup title.
