Former England captain Jos Buttler said that he is feeling a bit disappointed with his form in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Buttler has struggled to convert starts into big scores, but the batsman said he will stick to his natural attacking style and is not planning to change his approach in the Super Eights stage.
The right-handed batsman has scored just 53 runs in four innings at an average of 13.25 and strike rate of 135.90. He started the World Cup with 26 against Nepal and 21 against West Indies. However, he was out for 3 against both Scotland and Italy while trying to clear the infield during the power play.
To be honest, I am a bit disappointed – Jos Buttler due to poor form
Jos Buttler admitted that he has been batting well, but the runs have not come the way he expected. Butler said that converting starts into big scores has always been his strength. He told that he has been starting before getting out.
“I’m a bit disappointed to be honest. I felt like I was playing really well in South Africa, in SA20, without scoring,” Buttler said on his For the Love of Cricket podcast, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.
“One of the things I’m always proud of in T20 is that if you get into it, you’re able to go on and make good contributions. I’ve found that in my teens and twenties I get out a lot, get starts and then find ways to get out,” he said.
Maybe trying almost too hard – Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler admitted that he was probably working too hard at the crease. Buttler said that T20 cricket demands a positive mindset, but small mistakes cost him wickets. He said he wants to rely on his own strengths and take each match one step at a time.
“I think [I have been] Maybe trying almost too hard, as opposed to relaxing a bit at the crease and letting it happen. In the first two games, I got 20-20 games, but failing to step up and contribute is disappointing. And then a few low scores against Scotland and Italy… T20, you want to be positive and get on with it, but [I] Made some mistakes and got out,” Buttler added.
“I love batting and I love playing cricket and I love scoring runs. As much as you’re disappointed with your form and you obviously want to contribute to the team, part of cricket is that I love batting, and so not batting as much as you’d like to, it’s disappointing. It’s just trying to remember the things that make you do your best and try to take each game in that form.”
I saw Nasser Hussain saying, ‘Just bat for 15 overs’ – Jos Buttler
Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler said that T20 cricket forces batsmen to keep playing their shots. Butler said that he cannot bat just to survive but he should always play according to the situation.
“T20 is one of those games that asks you to keep playing,” Buttler said. “Sometimes, when you are out of form in a Test match, a batting coach might say, ‘Just control it a bit, and try to bat for an hour, and it will come back to you – no matter what, bat for an hour.'”
“But in T20, you have to keep playing the scoreboard. If you are chasing a target of 10 overs, you have to play accordingly. I saw Nasser saying, ‘Just bat for 15 overs’ and I would love to bat just for 15 overs, but I don’t want to bat for 15 overs just for myself and ignore the game. You still have to play the game,” he said.
