Australian legend Marcus Stoinis expressed his gratitude and respect for former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. Stoinis mentioned that as an overseas player, he got a lot of help and tips from Singh when he came to play in the Indian Premier League.
More than just a teammate, the Australian star praised Yuvraj Singh as a mentor who helped him hone his game a lot. Stoinis said that when he came to India, he was quite young and Yuvraj Singh was experienced. Despite a lot of differences, the budding Australian cricketer got to learn from the Indian cricket legend.
Stoinis recalls the days when he used to play with Yuvraj Singh
“I played with Yuvraj Singh in the IPL. Even though I was playing with him, I would describe him more as a mentor. I was quite young and he was obviously very experienced,” Stoinis said in a recent video released by the ICC.
Stoinis got a chance to share the same dressing room with Yuvraj Singh during the IPL 2018 season. This season, Yuvraj and Marcus participated in the tournament for Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Marcus Stoinis called Yuvraj – super talented, elegant and powerful.
The compact Australian cricketer, who himself gained a reputation as a power hitter, praised Yuvraj’s batting style. The Australian all-rounder described her as the embodiment of strength, beauty and immense talent.
Stoinis said, “Very talented, elegant and powerful. Not the elite power that probably makes headlines around the world today. It was a more relaxed, rhythmic power. Very nice guy, very helpful. I mean, for a young overseas player coming into the IPL, he was very good to me. Nothing but absolute respect.”
Abhishek Sharma, Priyansh Arya and Prabhasimran Singh are real-life examples to support Stoinis’ comments on Yuvraj’s mentoring abilities and helpful nature. Under the tutelage of the former Indian cricketer, Sharma, Arya and Singh gradually came into limelight, first in the Indian Premier League and then for Team India.
While Sharma has established himself as a regular opening batsman for Team India in T20Is, the other two batsmen, Arya and Singh, have played for India’s reserve team in the past.
Abhishek Sharma shared conversation with Yuvraj
In 2025, in an interview, recalling an instance, Abhishek Sharma revealed how Yuvraj inspired him to play for the national team.
“Paaji straight up told me, ‘I’m not preparing you for the state team, I’m not preparing you for the IPL, and I’m not preparing you to just handle things. I’m preparing you to play for India. You have to win matches for India. Write that down.’ And he said, “Next, next two, maximum three years, me,” the opener said.
