Australia has finally made the much-awaited change in the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup. A change seemed imminent before the match against Sri Lanka. Steve Smith has been included in the team in place of Josh Hazlewood.

Australia has had to deal with serious setbacks in its campaign. While the Australian team has been struggling with a number of injuries, including the absence of players like Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, they are now worried about the captain’s testicular injury.

Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign has been dealt a blow by a humiliating defeat to Zimbabwe in the second group-stage game. The Australian team failed to chase the target with the bat and hence, they will need an in-form batsman to keep them in the competition.

Steve Smith officially included in T20 World Cup squad

Following Mitchell Marsh’s injury, Steve Smith was immediately asked to be available to Sri Lanka for the remaining group-stage games. Smith reached Sri Lanka, but Marsh could not be released, as his chances of returning were slim if Australia progressed to the next stage of the World Cup.

However, after the loss to Zimbabwe, the Australian team was forced to include Steve Smith in the 15-man squad in place of Josh Hazlewood. The fast bowler was ruled out of the competition earlier this month due to an Achilles injury.

The right-handed batsman will be included in the squad in Kandy, and will feature in Monday evening’s game between Australia and Sri Lanka. He will be seen opening the innings with Travis Head; However, it will be interesting to see who replaces him in the playing eleven.
