Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie has made a bold prediction ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday, February 7. Former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie said that India and South Africa should reach the final, where the Proteas will defeat the defending champions.

India and Sri Lanka will host the 20-team World Cup. After the group stage, the tournament will move to the Super 8s and then the semi-finals. India will enter the event as defending champions after defeating South Africa in 2024. South Africa are still chasing their first white-ball World Cup title.

Gillespie’s former teammate Glenn McGrath had also predicted the India-South Africa final. However, McGrath said that although a one-sided final can always spring a surprise, India are a strong side to win.

Former Australia fast bowler Damien Fleming has backed India to defend their T20 World Cup title. Fleming said that Abhishek Sharma can dominate with the bat. He also pointed out that India has spin resources and Jasprit Bumrah, who has the ability to take wickets at the beginning of the innings and in the death overs.

“Abhishek Sharma could be the most impressive batsman of the tournament. And with the ball, he has a lot of spin options. Plus he has Bumrah, who can take wickets at the top and backend,” Fleming said.

India eyes third title in T20 World Cup

India have been drawn in Group A of the T20 World Cup 2026 along with Pakistan, Namibia, Netherlands and the United States. Meanwhile, South Africa will compete in Group D alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan, Canada and the United Arab Emirates.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eights, followed by semi-finals and a final.

India have not lost any bilateral T20I series since winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. They defeated Australia 2-1 in a five-match away series last year and won the Asia Cup 2025 under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav.

India will aim to win a record third T20 World Cup title in 2026. They will start their campaign against America on 7th February. Australia, who have been drawn in Group B along with Sri Lanka, Oman and Zimbabwe, will open their tournament against Ireland on February 11.

Jason Gillespie picks England and Sri Lanka as T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finalists

Three former Australian fast bowlers have shared different views on which teams will reach the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026. Glenn McGrath backed India, South Africa and England, while saying that the final semi-final spot could go to either Pakistan or New Zealand.

However, Damien Fleming included Australia in his semi-final list. He chose India, South Africa and England as the other three teams. Australia failed to reach the semi-finals in the last two editions after winning the title in 2021.

Jason Gillespie also knocked Australia out of his top four. He chose India, South Africa, England and Sri Lanka. Notably, India and England, along with West Indies, are the only teams to win the T20 World Cup twice.
