Former Team India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar made a light comment praising Abhishek Sharma after his brilliant performance in the third T20 match against New Zealand. Manjrekar also called Abhishek “very good looking”, a comment which immediately attracted attention along with his cricketing praise.
Abhishek scored an unbeaten 68 off just 20 balls in the third T20I against New Zealand at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday, January 25. He completed his half-century in just 14 balls, which is the second fastest T20I half-century by an Indian. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh completed his half-century in 12 balls.
He is also very good looking – Sanjay Manjrekar on Abhishek Sharma
Speaking on his Instagram handle, Sanjay Manjrekar said that Abhishek Sharma is ideally suited for T20 cricket, as he looks to get maximum value from every ball with a fearless mindset. He described him as a natural hitter who does not worry about getting out or chasing personal achievements.
Manjrekar said, “So this is a guy who tries to get maximum returns from every ball. Great ball-hitting talent, unselfish, not afraid of getting out and not caring about milestones, that’s what makes him a sensational player. And he is very good looking too.”
“It’s a God-given talent. The other thing to like about him is that he is extremely unselfish. When you look at the centuries he has scored in T20Is, the strike rate is over 200. He is not someone who is going to slow down just because he is in the 90s.”
He further added, “He doesn’t care about getting out, which is a great quality in T20 cricket. On the first ball, he will take a risk and try to hit a six on it. Such batsmen are extremely dangerous. Not the kind of batsman who will hit a four and try to extend his innings.”
See Abhishek Sharma’s technique – Sanjay Manjrekar
Manjrekar said that Abhishek’s style fits perfectly with the demands of the shorter format. Manjrekar said that the requirements of batting completely change from Test to T20. He said that Abhishek’s technique allows him to score runs quickly, which suits the demands of T20 cricket.
Manjrekar said, “It is very interesting when you look at Abhishek Sharma’s technique and then compare it with Test cricket technique. Abhishek Sharma is a role model when it comes to technique in T20 cricket.”
He said, “In Test cricket, we often talk about how the bat and pad should come closer together, and you have to play closer to the body. If you do that in T20 cricket, you are out. Your strike rate will be 20. In T20 cricket, it is exactly the opposite.”
Abhishek does wonders- Sanjay Manjrekar
The cricketer turned commentator said that players should be given room to swing the entire bat so that the bat comes cleanly to hit the ball in T20 and Abhishek executes this approach very well.
“Don’t keep your bat and pad close together. In fact, make every effort to ensure that nothing gets in the way of the swing of your bat and the big bat. This way, the bat is clear to come down and hit the ball. This is a simple T20 technique that you must adopt. And that’s what Abhishek Sharma does wonderfully,” he concluded.
In just 18 months after his international debut, Sharma became the fastest player to reach 1,000 T20I runs and recorded two of India’s top five fastest fifties. He has scored 1,267 runs in 36 innings at an average of 38.39 and strike rate of 195.22, which also includes two centuries.
