During the BBL 2025-26 clash between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder at the SCG, Smith shocked many when he refused to take a single to Babar during a power surge. The moment immediately sparked debate, with many wondering if there was tension between the two modern greats.
However, Smith has now clarified that there was no bad blood. In fact, the two had already had a comfortable conversation. The Australian batting icon had already informed Babar that he wanted to keep the strike on the first ball of the Power Surge.

The Australian star praised Babar’s batting and highlighted how well Pakistan’s batsmen played against Sydney Thunder and how easily their partnership came together. He also revealed that they also discussed golf after the training session before the Brisbane Heat game.
Smith praised Babar and revealed their friendly relationship off the field.
“No, he’s good. We were chatting earlier, so yes, I thought he batted really well the other night. Our partnership was good. Yes, we were talking about our golf earlier, so you can see it on the screen. Look, he’s looking forward to tonight. Looks like a good wicket, so hopefully we can start well again,” Steve Smith told broadcasters on Fox Cricket.
Adding a fun twist to the story, Smith also revealed that a possible golf outing is on the cards in the future if Babar ever travels to New York. He signed off by saying, “I haven’t done it yet, but yes, if he ever gets there.”

Meanwhile, Babar Azam was not happy after a tense moment with Steve Smith at the SCG. Smith’s decision to take strike in the power surge upset Babar, who felt he was not treated respectfully.

According to Code Sports report, Babar did not join his teammates for the usual handshake after the match was over. While the rest of the Sixers players went on the field, Babar stayed in the dressing room. His absence was noticed by many and soon became a topic of discussion.
The reporter further said that Babar kept himself away from the team and shared his frustration with some teammates. He was clearly disappointed and decided not to take part in the celebrations after the victory.
