Harbhajan pointed out that Gill never took his place in the team for granted and continued to work on his game despite intense scrutiny. He said competition is a healthy sign for Indian cricket and sometimes even top players have to sit out when there is a demand for a change in the team composition.
Harbhajan said that one of the strongest arguments in Gill’s favor is the leadership responsibility given to him in other formats. Gill leading India in Test and One Day Internationals is a clear sign that the selectors and team management see him as a long-term leader and a cornerstone of Indian cricket.
“This is no sign for Gill. He was not taking his place lightly, but the competition is so tough that there are many players who can take that place and perform well for the team. This is not the end of the road for him. He is a great player with beautiful technique. I believe he will make a great comeback and we must not forget that he is still the Test captain.” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by India Today.
